Debra, I just ordered it myself from Dr. Lawler, along with JULIA'S ROSE and YELLOW STILETTO. I've had his KATHERINE CALDWELL for several years now and really love it, so I had to check out his new website. Beautiful daylilies, especially RAPTURE OF LOVE!

And his two garden videos are really wonderful and well worth watching!

I got Life's March Wind and The Maiden in the AHS auction late last spring from Kathy's Daylilies (Bruce Fowler's intros) - nice large fans and they have made it through the winter just fine - looking forward to seeing them bloom this year!

Betty - I was happy when I saw Hilliard finally had a website. I also bought his Canary Flush after seeing the many fabulous photos he posted of it last year. I've thought about adding Katherine Caldwell since I think I could cross it with my pink UFs.

I just looked at the site, both Canary Flush and Rapture of Love looked great, but I'll have to wait a few years.

Videos are fantastic and inspiring. He has some very beautiful DLs. I'll also be on the look out for Katherine Caldwell. Saw one site with it, it's not easy to find. I really like the ones you purchased and Rapture of Love is incredible (and pricey, but that's all relative).

If anyone is interested in KATHERINE CALDWELL, you might email Dr. Lawler through his website and ask about purchasing one from him, since it sounds like he must have a bunch. I think it's a real beauty!

My first order (in-state, so for pick up, placed way back in early February) included two for $45 and one for $60. It took a lot to go through with the order.

My justification was that I REALLY wanted them (weak, I know) AND the grower is a great guy and a fellow North Carolinian. So...I felt less guilty. I was also supposed to be not buying so many this year, but I'm up to 48 additions, so...

I know of two cvs I lost over our warmer, wetter winter. That makes it okay in my book.

I am the exact opposite. I am too cheap to pay taxes on purchases so avoid same-state purchases at all costs! Grin
Thankfully, I live in a colder state where there are not many vendors, so I am not really missing out.

On the other hand, Plasko20, you come face-to-face with the grandtotal of your out-of-state purchases when you file your use tax each year. Those in-state ones are kinda pay as you go so they don't count. Thinking

Huh? What's that? I've never mentioned anything I bought on my taxes, unless as a deduction for my business.

I think what Wendy is referring to is the Use Tax. All states except the 5 that don't have Sales Tax add a Use Tax on to what you owe each year. States took such a hit on their Sales Tax revenues when people started buying things on-line, they instituted what they call a Use Tax. Essentially, in Illinois, they use data to create a formula to estimate how many dollars average people spend on out of state, on-line purchases, and they create a factor to charge you something to make up for the lost Sales Taxes caused by residents not buying from in-state stores and vendors.

In my state, it used to be that you could save all your receipts from on-line purchases and itemize them instead of using the formula version of the Use Tax. So if you don't buy on-line as much as most people, you can itemize your Use Tax to save some money. But if you're a big Amazon user and buy on-line from out of state anyway, in my state, most people probably just bite the bullet and pay the formula-based the Use Tax. They are getting their pound of flesh whichever way you choose. But it is true you probably pay a smaller percent of "sales tax" overall if you buy more things on line than the average person and choose the formula-based Use Tax.
That's because the rate they charge is based on the average person's on-line buying.

I was going to recommend Oak Hill daylilies as a source for Katherine Caldwell since that is where I purchased ours, but Bonnie is holding it for increase. Guess it has become popular. We certainly love ours. Just decided to add a picture, you can see the date, it blooms early for us.

I mentioned before really wanting to add Palantir.
Thumb of 2021-03-20/MrKGDickie/ff0cc8(hybridizer's pic). It's a UK variety no longer sold by the hybridizer, but he did identify a possible source in the UK.

I may be able to track it down, and just bite the bullet to buy it. Can I even buy a plant from the UK? I have no idea.

In the meanwhile, I'm looking for other cultivars with a similar "quilled all around" asterisk shape. There is of course Asterisk itself, but that seemingly only has quilled sepals. There's also Dance of the Fairies, available in the LA Store, but its quilling seems inconsistent and mixed in with twisting.

Does anyone know of a cultivar with the asterisk shape of Palantir?
Hardy hibiscus are a hobby, but daylilies are an obsession.

I can never decide if my lack of space and utter lack of ability to grow from seeds are good or bad things. I mean, I spend more on daylilies than I might on (some) seeds, but I don't spend any equipment on lights, potting media, racks, etc...all of which I'd need in my tiny house.

I may...just MAY try crossing something with August Flame this year. I'm curious to see if it's bud-builder qualities might pass down to offspring.

Anyone know if I should use AF's pod or pollen if that's my goal? Or maybe I should just self-pollinate it? (He's thinking about dipping his big toe in the pool, ladies and gentlemen. This could be the end!)

Golliwog and Dancing Summerbird come to mind as having a similar shape to what you're looking for.

You could try typing "quill" in the color description box using the search by characteristics feature of the NGA database. Also checking the parentage and child plants might yield results. Spatulate with quilled sepals would have a similar appearance to Palantir even though all tepals might not be quilled. Inconsistencies happen with shape/UF characteristics so a cultivar may not always produce the form you're looking for consistently.

Paul's mention of Faberge Easter had me looking at one somewhat similar, but the coloring is much "gentler" and I like the stats on it. This one might have to come live here this spring:
