And they love to eat when it's raining. Look for them then. Crazy birds, only bird I know of who can be counted on to show up at the feeders when it's raining & they chirp as they eat.

Ohh ok, good to know. Thanks Ann. Thumbs up

Wow! Wow! Wow!

I am literally blown away by so many terrific bird photos!!!

Asa - Your camera and lens are to die for but .... I would need your expert photographic eye to get even close to the shots that you get! That is an incredible artist eye that you have there!

And many others here have such wonderful photos, too! So many birds that I have never and probably will never see in real life. I am loving this thread! Wow! Keep snapping and sharing with all of us! Thumbs up

I love cardinals, too. I have a family of them that frequent my yard year round. And late afternoon/early evening is when I see them chasing each other through my backyard trees and shrubs. They are a delight to watch. They are intelligent birds too. They must be pretty accustomed to me, because they don't get spooked by my presence. (They know who feeds them perhaps.)

I laugh every year in Fall/Winter when the Painted Buntings start showing up. The cardinals seem to be the leader (especially the male cardinals) to the feeder first. And then the Painted Buntings follow the cardinals to the feeders. Almost like the male cardinals are the protectors for the Painted Buntings. The Cardinals will go to the feeders and eat a little, but then they just perch there for the Painted Buntings to come. And I see them chasing each other around too. Like beloved visiting cousins or something. It's really remarkable to see the relationship between different bird species. The buntings often follow the Cardinals when they first arrive.

I don't know if you know that the Cardinals and Painted Buntings will pull blooms off of nectar plants and suck the sugar from the base of the blooms, but I captured the act and posted it to my YouTube account a few years back:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?...
Sorry for the less than sharp video. YouTube tends to soften the sharpness on top of my less that stellar camera, but you can make out the birds in the act of sipping the nectar blooms. I love watching how birds interact with each other.
My most watched video is this one about Painted Buntings which is a hoot to watch:

Yesterday I went out at sunrise and it was kind of a mess. Before the sun rose, the light wasn't good enough for anything but grainy messes. Then, after the sun rose, the light was so blasty that...well...see for yourself. There's no substitute for good light. Think I'm gonna keep my bird hunting to the late afternoon for a while.

Put a 1.4x teleconverter on my 450mm lens yesterday - making it effectively a 945mm lens (with the crop sensor). I don't use a tripod when I shoot birds, and with the lousy light...anyway... Here's a bald eagle. Like the shape more than anything. But the distance in that light...pretty rough.

It is very common in our country.
This bird is very territorial and defends its nest by attacking those who approach it. It has red eyes and beak.It has some kind of spikes on its wings with which it attacks those who approach their nest

There is a single curve-billed Thrasher who has become my buddy in the garden this winter. In spite of sort of fierce-looking eyes, he's quite tame and sweet with a lovely musical song and hangs around a couple of feet from me. Prefers insects from the soil but will eat from the suet bricks, spending much time wiping the suet from his beak on branches afterwards.

Oh, my goodness, that pileated! Fabulous! I see a lot of them; can't get good pics because I see them flying through the trees. It's finally sunny today, and all the birds outside are rejoicing with song! I've heard cardinals, wrens, finches and other birds whose songs and calls I don't recognize vocalizing outside.
I also heard a flock of grackles, and went to the window in time to see them fly over crapping on everything! D'Oh!
Yesterday is gone. Tomorrow has not yet come. We have only today. Let us begin.

Here's my little Ladderback pair. Not as big or flashy as the pileated, but cute, with fun stripes. The female (no red) is shy, hard to catch. The third in that row is out of focus but shows the back stripes. I'm pretty sure they are the only ones who visit—always one at a time, I never see them together.

I need you to look at this bird blown up a little. This bird has a grayish hood. The beak is a bit longer and there is no eye ring that is discernible. Then take a closer look at the Orange crowned, they are not the same.

I do not think it is the tiny, olive green and yellow Orange crowned Warbler. This is maybe a Vireo or a gray hooded Warbler such as a Nashville or Mourning Warbler. I think those are two in that group.

My husband thought it does look different, I didn't think so. But what is it if it's not Orange Crowned Warbler.

I am putting my money on a MacGillivray's Warbler.
All of the other possibilities that I was thinking about are species that occur East of the Mississippi. The Macgillivray's Is a west coast bird.
