Wow! Wow! Wow!
I am literally blown away by so many terrific bird photos!!!
Asa - Your camera and lens are to die for but .... I would need your expert photographic eye to get even close to the shots that you get! That is an incredible artist eye that you have there!
And many others here have such wonderful photos, too! So many birds that I have never and probably will never see in real life. I am loving this thread! Wow! Keep snapping and sharing with all of us!
I love cardinals, too. I have a family of them that frequent my yard year round. And late afternoon/early evening is when I see them chasing each other through my backyard trees and shrubs. They are a delight to watch. They are intelligent birds too. They must be pretty accustomed to me, because they don't get spooked by my presence. (They know who feeds them perhaps.)
I laugh every year in Fall/Winter when the Painted Buntings start showing up. The cardinals seem to be the leader (especially the male cardinals) to the feeder first. And then the Painted Buntings follow the cardinals to the feeders. Almost like the male cardinals are the protectors for the Painted Buntings. The Cardinals will go to the feeders and eat a little, but then they just perch there for the Painted Buntings to come. And I see them chasing each other around too. Like beloved visiting cousins or something. It's really remarkable to see the relationship between different bird species. The buntings often follow the Cardinals when they first arrive.
I don't know if you know that the Cardinals and Painted Buntings will pull blooms off of nectar plants and suck the sugar from the base of the blooms, but I captured the act and posted it to my YouTube account a few years back:

Sorry for the less than sharp video. YouTube tends to soften the sharpness on top of my less that stellar camera, but you can make out the birds in the act of sipping the nectar blooms. I love watching how birds interact with each other.
My most watched video is this one about Painted Buntings which is a hoot to watch:
