Can you get clear close-up photos and post them for us seedheads to look at? If no one here can recognize them, grow a few of each and then post photos of the young plants if you still don't recognize them.

I don't know of a specific seed ID site, though.

I'd like to advertise one of DND's own seed offerings in the swap - the phlox "Sugar Stars". I've grown that plant several times from seed now and it lives up to its name. Gorgeous little flowers and great container plant. One year I over planted and didn't know where to put the extras and they just stayed in the little peat plug and grew like a champ indoors and I enjoyed the flowers inside, even in the tiny tiny starter space!

That's from 2019 when I didn't plant them out, haha.

Remember, these won't be in my list but in DogsNDaylilies' list 😁

Oh here's an ad for one of my listings! I just harvested a TON of seeds from my sinningia helleri and put them in the swap today!

The plant was considered extinct until 2015, when plants were discovered about to be destroyed for construction. I've been growing it for a few years now and it's a pretty easy to grow plant and interesting as a rare species. The leaves are thick and striking - green on top and burgundy on the undersides. It grows a large tuber, too! Pretty cool.

I made five packets of approximately a TON of seeds. It's slow to germinate so I can't test the batch, but I'm pretty sure you'll get at least one plant out of the whole mess of seeds, haha.

Yes, though if you give it a very big pot, it's a very big houseplant! It has an interesting growth habit that makes me think it's used to hanging out with bushes or being support for twining vines in the wild (it grows from the top only and older leaves die and do not regrow), so I think it would make a really good plant in a companion planting situation - I was thinking I'd try growing one of my cloud forest vines or something along with it.

There's not a ton of growing info on the plant on the internet because it's just recently been reintroduced - so don't believe the "it grows to a foot and a half" or "if you cut it back it dies" stuff. I've cut mine back several times and get new growth directly from the tuber or off of the stems I've cut back. Also my oldest one just tried to hit the ceiling! I just cut it down today after harvesting seeds.

The plant can go outside in a temperate climate but has to come back in for winter or if it gets very hot. Hummingbirds and bumble bees like it. But so do aphids. It's a very juicy plant. The stems get thick and stay solid!

It's one of my favorites, it flowers ALL THE TIME. Every other leaf pair gets flowers right underneath.

Hi! I just moved and don't have great seed storage. I have little boxes and bags, but Would it be better to keep those bags in a cabinet in my living room (about 65F), in the garage (unheated), or in the fridge (temp =??). Some people even freeze their native seeds, is that right?

Any guidance is appreciated, thanks!

The biggest danger imo is moisture.
I've stored my seeds refrigerated in Tuppperware with excellent results. I currently store them in a cabinet at 65 - 70⁰f . I don't know about storing garden seeds frozen, especially those native to regions that do not get frost. The temperature swings in my garage, making it a poor choice for seed storage. It is most important to keep seeds dry.

Agreed on moisture being the biggest bogeyman coming for your seeds. I bought a big bag of silica gel packets. I put a few in each of my seed bags (I use ziploc bags to sort seeds by type), then a handful into the plastic box where I store the bags before I seal it up.

Sometimes I even drop a packet directly in with seeds before I seal them up into a plastic bag - like anyone getting any of my freshly harvested seeds from yesterday will get them with a silica gel packet, just in case.

You can save the packets that come in stuff like vitamin bottles, if you don't want to spend extra money.

Seeds need 3 things to survive: dry, dark & consistent temperatures. I keep mine in plastic totes under my bed, that seems to be the coolest spot in the house. I tried storing them in my kitchen freezer, but I had trouble with condensation. Every time you open the freezer door, all the warm air flows in dropping the temperature inside. This causes things to start to thaw out. You don't notice with larger items, but small things like seeds take a very short time to thaw. If I were to freeze seeds again, I'd probably put them in a chest type freezer, something that isn't opened very often.

Joolie, I do the same thing. Any silica packs I get in items get tossed into one of my seed totes. It's amazing how many of those things you can accumulate in a year or two.

I use a giant ammo can for my seeds and then keep them in the house in the summer and in the garage in the winter. All seeds are also in there inside ziploc bags

It's amazing how many things come with silica gel packets in them. I have a big stash of them in my seed box and tuck them in between the packets. Like others said I think controlling moisture is more important than temperature. Cooler temps are better in general though. An unconditioned garage would have a lot temperature extremes. Plus it's usually not as tightly sealed up as a house and you might have a mouse find your seeds, like I had happen just the other day!

I keep my seed packets in a divided plastic three level storage box meant for Christmas ornaments. I knew I had old photos of it and just went to pull them up from... 2009? Wow, I've gotten my money's worth out of that box! I've changed my organization of it over the years. I used to prepare a lot of packets ahead of time for swaps, guessing what people might want. I don't do that anymore which saves a lot of space and work. Now I use one level for perennials, one for annuals, and one for the veggie garden. I use another shoe box sized box to sort seeds I plant to sow that year based on season and germination requirements.

I've just started to go through and remove a lot of my older seed that I won't likely want to grow again and are too old to swap. I have to make room for more new seeds! I promised myself to never have more long term seed storage than what will fit in the box.

Being the slightly ocd type who can't stand a messy pile of seed packets I went on the search to find something to organize with. This is a pic from off internet that I was immediately like THIS is wat I'm looking for!
