I had an idea about gathering seeds... when the flowers start to fade, couldn't you tape a sandwich baggie around the spike so that the seeds fall into the baggie?

Something paper might be better. I wonder if you could tape a cone of paper around the spike? The only time I've gathered seeds off salvia, I had to work to get them out, so it wasn't an issue.

I thought of that, but the seeds are so teeny I'd be afraid that the paper wouldn't actually work. Plus since they fall out so quickly, the baggie could stay on the plant longer. My Purple Rain salvia's seeds are a bit hard to get out of their seed pods, but I have no idea on the Blue Angel or Black & Blue. I know that the seeds for Black & Blue are microscopic.. I tried growing them once but the seeds never grew. Sad I suck at growing things from seed....

Was at Walmart last night, had to look at the seeds. In the 20cent pack seed collections, they had a red salvia (can't remember which one.. fire house? fire something). I figure that for 20 cents, I'll try it. I can't grow anything from seed, but I picked up those, some zinnas, & some morning glory seeds. *cross fingers*

Toni--
You might try the winter sowing technique (actually spring sowing for those). I've had pretty good luck doing it that way for those seeds. Make sure you soak the morning glory seeds for at least 24 hrs. before planting.

Duane - I tried winter sowing a few years ago.. nothing grew. I just suck at growing from seed. And why do you have to soak the morning glories?

And I'll just bet those are Heavenly Blue morning glories. I picked up one of those cheap packets of MG seeds last year, and not one of the darn things grew. And I usually do well growing stuff from seed. But you ought to be able to grow the zinnias! Smiling

Many seeds have a very hard seed coat that need nicked with a knife or filed, or soaked for a period of time to break the seed coat. morning glories and lupines are some just off the top of my head.

Seed packs for 20 cents???!!! Blinking Blinking Blinking

I've never seen seed packs that cheap! What brand was it?

There's a Salvia 'Lighthouse Red', could it have been that one?

I know that they always have seeds packets for $.50 as well as the more expensive ones. Makes sense to buy the cheaper ones sometimes if you need fewer seeds with no waste.
