I can successfully grow and have blooming cannas in my pond though it is not in full sun. I just got a new variety of a dwarf , canna patens. Does anyone know if this can take bog situations? Or should I just pot it and put it in the sun?

I believe the cannas that grow in the ponds are different than the other cannas. I did have one years ago that I grew in my bog and it grew and flowered happily. Unfortunately, I lost the plant in my overwintering inside attempts. You, however, are in a zone that may allow your plant to stay outside year round.

Do you have the actual name of the plant? Different marginal plants have different depth requirements of water that they enjoy and this information would be tied to the name of the plant.

Hi Carolyn, My hybrid cannas and canna indica do well in my zone all year around. They die back in the winter but come back and multiply every year. I cannot find any information on this dwarf variety, canna patens, nor it's cultivar. Just thought someone might know before I sink it into the bog. I have enough to experiment. I might put most into a pot and just put one or two rhizomes in to the water and see what happens. I like that it will be shorter-about 18" to stand in front of it's taller cousins.

I did some searching and I am getting mixed signals as to whether all cannas will do well in a bog or whether there are special cannas that like to be planted into a bog situation. In any event, it looks like there is some good information in this link. http://water-garden-blog.com/w...

I had so many cannas sprouting around in my gardens I dug them up, put them in a pot with rocks and put them into pond. It grew so high it kept falling over in the slightest wind but it sure did grow. Took them all out and gave them away as in the garden I couldn't keep them free of the water sucking bugs that ruined them.

I've put just any kind of canna in the pond and they seem to do well. I generally plant them in dirt (without any vermiculite that floats) and put gravel on top of the pot and then sink it a foot or so in the pond. They have all grown and bloomed. I don't have any in there now for the same reason Bonnie took them out, they blow over easily because they get so tall and it is a hassle. Because I'm in the tropics, I could leave them in there all year but I got tired of cleaning up the dirt and rocks that would spill out when they fell over. I may put some more in there one day, when enough time has passed that I forget what a hassle they are

Years ago in Calif I had cannas (not specifically water cannas, just ones that were at Lowe's) in a skippy filter on a pond. They were bare root in gravel. They also did well and bloomed and ended up sending up so many pups that they filled the filter and it was a heck of job to get them out.

I had the flag iris in the filter and they went crazy in the filter. The biggest problem I had with the cannas was overwintering them. Not a problem you would have in your zone. I would love to be in a warmer zone.

I am in southern CA and have cannas in pots in my pond. Just regular cannas that I had extras of, they do well, die back in the winter and come on strong in the spring.

I am new to this site and it has been so nice to meet & chat with people that love gardening and plants. I have the Longwood canna hybrid called Endeavour My zone is 7b and it overwinters in the the ground next to the pond. The area stays on the wet side year round. I usually stick a pot in the pond too. It has bright reddish-pink flowers and the leaves are more rounded than regular cannas. The foliage color is very pretty with a blue tinge.
Here is some information I found on the Longwood Botanical Garden site:

"Native to South America, Canna glauca is a water canna that is noted for its blue-green foliage and its ability to grow well in shallow water. Species plants grow 4-6’ tall and feature narrow, blue-green leaves (to 18” long) and small pale yellow flowers. In the 1970s, Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania crossed Canna glauca with several different terrestrial cannas. The result was the Longwood cultivars, which are four hybrid water cannas that typically grow 2-6’ tall with a spread of 2-3’ as follows: (1) ‘Endeavor’ (red flowers), (2) ‘Erubus’ (salmon pink flowers), (3) ‘Ra’ (yellow flowers) and (4) ‘Tanny’ (burnt orange flowers). Longwood cannas typically bloom all summer"

Hey, definitely give them a try in the water. Cannas all like wet feet, and if it's warm (or in Texas, hot!) I'm betting they'll go crazy. You may have trouble keeping them in check.

But I wouldn't put them in the water until the water is warm.

I've tried various Cannas in my pond here, and they've all done fine. This year, I have extras of the Tropicannas with the crazy stripey foliage - they multiplied nicely last year in pots under the downspouts. Going to give them a try in the pond.

When I was still working , we had a lot of city streets that were a shortcut between the 05 freeway and the 261tollroad. There were 3 major wholesale growers along that route, and I always marveled at the cannas (tropicannas) that sat under their drainage where it dropped into county drainage. The rest of their plants were watered with overhead sprinklers, but the cannas thrived in that ditch.

Some things just seem to thrive with that constant moisture.

I really love the striped leaves on the tropicana.

I got some of the dwarf ones from Lowe's last year. They were only about 18in tall, so not the problem with blowing over that Jonna mentioned.

Just noticed they are coming up again, and after chatting with you all about it, think I will try some of them in my little pond this year. I've had them beside the pond before, but had to remember to water them. They have really pretty flowers, some are white with faint pink spotting, and some are yellow with the same pink mottling. Let's see if I can dig back and find a pic.

I've had issues with the "short" cannas getting taller in the pond. Every canna I've put in water has grown beyond all bounds. I've never put Phasion (nee Tropicanna) in a pond, though.

We've had cannas in our pond for years and they winter fine in zone 8a. They freeze back in the winter and as you can see come back in the spring. Ours are just in the rocks with no soil, no pot, no nada. Makes a great landing zone for dragon flies!
