I'll try for an updated photo this weekend. They are growing like little weeds - getting their feathers and looking rather gawky.

Chicks are starting to get their real feathers in along with their coloring. I think it will be a pretty flock - 4 darks, 4 reds, 4 light. Hoping for a rooster in the mix.

They sure are peepy little things, and really starting to roll through their chow. Two have the feathered feet, and two will have topknots.

The chicks are now about a month old, almost all feathered out. We let one out experimentally and she immediately scooted through the fence for a rather lively 30 minute chase. A favorite pastime is 'Worm Wars" -- I dig up several worms and put them in the coop then watch them chase each other around making all sorts of noise. Pretty entertaining.

The viewing screen on my camera wasn't working and the shutter was delayed, so these were literally point-and-hope shots. I think I must need new batteries. The gray/black is the most curious (Mojojojo), the white one is Karen, and the one with the topknot is Bubbles. Other than that, I'm clueless who goes with what name, even though I have it written down. Some are getting pretty interesting color.

They look kindof mean but they're the sweetest, they're now totally tame, come when you call them,
and follow you around in the yard - very cute indeed!
Luna must not go in the yard where the chickens are!
What???

Yes, they are growing like weeds. I have two with the feathered feet -- Karen (the white with black markings) and Mojojo (the black/gray). As they mature, I'll have to match them up with their proper breed (I kept the receipt) which I think will be easier once they are fully feathered out. So far, no sign of a rooster, although I am unsure when that would be evident. If I don't end up with any, I'll find a free one from the feed store bulletin board. I like that crowing in the morning, and if someone wants to set on eggs, may as well have them be fertile. My neighbor next door (rooster-less) reports that one of his hens has been sitting on a golf ball for a couple weeks now...

Do you eat the fertile eggs? Just curious... tentative about that myself. I hope you have a rooster though! Thumbs up

Yes. As I recall from our last round of chickens, as long as you gather eggs regularly, the most you might find is an occasional dark red spot in the yolk. I do recall cracking large quantities of eggs into a smaller cup before combining them together in the event one was 'bad' but other than that I just used 'em like eggs. This particular coop has a fairly large nest box that will easily accommodate 2-3 chickens, and it was my previous experience that they all tended to share one box anyway, so hopefully the eggs will all be in one spot. I did get one bantie and that particular breed tends to get broody more often than others so I may end up with baby chicks down the road.

I have had no success finding a small white mulberry tree, so went with a persimmon for inside the chicken yard. I don't think I've ever even tasted one, but they look like jolly fruit (bright orange), the tree is small, and it gets good fall color as well. My plan is to just let the fruit drop to the ground for chicken treats. Per the tag, it should start bearing in the 2nd year, although it is just a 4' whip at this point so I won't hold my breath.

We added 9 chicks to our brood this week. Excited for them to be big enough to move them outside. They make such a mess in the house. I'll keep them separated from the older ones until mid-June, and then the pecking war will begin, unfortunately.

Yikes, in the house?? Don't think I could go there...my husband would have a fit. Where do you keep them? How many will you have once you've integrated the new ones? As I recall from some of your photos, you have a fairly large coop. Are you doing something with the eggs other than personal use? Have you stuck with one breed, or do you run a mixed flock? Rooster or no? So many questions...
