I am using straight-up miracle grow until covered and the top layer is more of a finely chipped mulch. The mulch material is more inexpensive and it breaks down, feeding the peony.
In the spring, I move the bags quite a lot until freezing temps are gone, but then the bags sit for quite a few weeks before I move them to my ranch-style porch where they remain all summer. I will move them once back onto my driveway near the garage door - and eventually they'll come in for the winter.
Anyhow, I guess that I am saying that I don't move them very often and hadn't worried too much about the soil shift. As it turns out, the peonies seem to grab that stuff and hold onto it rather firmly.

I might have to use some grow bags this year, I'm running out of space already.
I'm wondering about Peony Shop Holland, has anybody received anything from them yet? When do they ship?
Think it's 42nd week? Think that means they should be getting them ready to box up now. I actually had to look it up earlier to figure out when they should be going out!

I have received 9 boxes of peonies from Gold City and Solaris, I'm going to plant the tree peonies first tomorrow. Today I've been busy dumping things out of my compost bins, they weight a ton, plus it rained last night so the traction was not good. Nothing from Alderman's yet.

This is what I received from Karen on October 4:
from Peony Shop:
We are preparing the shipment for cleaning and possible we might ship it this week, but that also depend on the possibilities with air cargo as we need to reserve long time before.
As all airplanes are full with cargo.

I opened my box from Solaris. I took this picture and was about to dump the box, then I found out another huge root of Shima Nishiki. Anyway I'll take a picture of that one later.

I got my box from Solaris today but won't open it until Friday. Not planting for another 2 weeks, anyway. Email from Adelman's that they shipped today!
New roots arrived from Brooks Gardens Peonies yesterday. My first time ordering from them; nice looking plants. Holes were already prepped and they are in the ground.

I received Adelman's roots a couple of days ago and planted most of them today. The only one left is Angel Choir TP. Took them 2 weeks to arrive and received a bill from Canadian Customs for additional 55 dollars. Shipment sat in customs for a week. Happy with the roots and now know why Christmas Velvet is expensive - roots are rather tricky to divide.
Also planted potted Fawn that I got from local nursery on sale for 12 dollars and tax. Generally it is a gamble as you never know what you are getting, I would say 20% chance that is correct one.
Great selections and roots, Greg and Alex! Alex, was your Adelman's order huge? Does your customs typically stop shipments like that or are they getting worse the last few years? US customs did that to us the year I accepted the order, assume we had the same thing the last 2 years when someone else got them.
