Just got my box, nothing like that smell of fresh daylilies that hit you when opening the box. I dont even think I need to soak these, they are going straight to their new home.

I got Lambertsons Stinger. Its the first time I have ever bought a specific plant to cross with specific things. I ve got some toothy seedlings I rather like, but I SO needed to get some branching...bud count, and I needed a tall one. This fits the bill. I could have liked the eye better, but hopefull some of the eyes on the seedlings will make up for that. They sent Pompous Polly as the bonus. Ive never ordered from them before, they sent really nice, big, healthy plants. I rarely buy an intro, because of the price, but I wasnt going to wait another year to see what its pollen did for me. It is SOOO exciting to get my first order of the year from Dan Trimmer. I got it earlier than usual because Dragonfly Dawn blooms so early. I had such good luck selling seeds last year from it, that I decided to get more. So I ordered it twice this year giving me 4 huge fans from them, they are sending DF's this year. So if you don't want scapes cut off from DD better get it now. One fan had a scape.

I also got their fabulous new Waves of Joy. It was a HUGE SF. I also got Starburst Fantasy, 2 huge fans with scapes and Orange Spice, two huge fans.

So they soaked overnight in this huge pot, it is whiskey barrel size. They are now ready to plant today. I will do this when it warms up. It is to be 69 here today and sunny.

Dot

Happily soaking in this huge pot.

Lyle, thank you for showing us the difference using the white umbrella makes. We bought a white umbrella two years ago and have not taken it out of the box. Actually, I forgot until late summer last year that we had bought one. We MUST remember to use it this year after I remember where I put it. Rolling my eyes.

Doris - I first got the idea of the white umbrella from Leslie (LaLambchop) on the old Dave's Garden site. As I remember Fred Manning had a dark seedling he was have trouble getting an accurate photo for his records, and Leslie recommended the white umbrella....Anyway it is a good garden tool, and I as well as others am grateful to Leslie for sharing.
The white umbrella is a must for near whites, and very darks on a bright sunny day

I think that is accurate, my first knowledge of the white umbrella - My memory is more like a short winter day, with not spring in sight----

Betty - I will be trading places with you around July, with the temps in Phoenix can hoover around 110 in the summer. The only quality blooms at that time is from the cooler climate gardens..

Leslie - I read on another thread you wanted blooms from a greenhouse - I don't have a greenhouse, just 82 degree temps in March..It's raining today in Phoenix (a rare event in the desert) so today's blooms are a little soggy.

These are Bill Maryott's daylilies, I received back in September --- To critique these daylilies I would say they do well for wet cool conditions, something I rarely see here in the desert. My northern test garden is supposed to receive between 10 to 12 inches of snow today, so I guess I will just enjoy my wet blooms.

What would happen if I cut my leaves back now? Would it hurt the blooms. They were looking good, and then after the last couple nights of freeze, they started to wilt, now that I look at them they are getting worse and worse, Im guesssing they will die back anyway, and I dont want to clean up around them.
Im hot, im tired, I hurt, I itch, I stink, yep...looks like daylily season has begun. Trying to get more mix in the pots that are looking low and hit them up with some milorganite.

Lyle, thank you for your kind words. I mentioned a greenhouse only because I didn't think anyone else would have blooms this early.

Pam, I think you would set your plants back if you cut the foliage now. From what I've learned in Master Gardener class the best you can do when cold or windy weather approaches is to water like crazy a day or two in advance. The better hydrated they are the better they'll do. How about some Superthrive to help the ones that were cold damaged?

I wouldn't cut the foliage back. If it dies back then so be it. Last season I cut back foliage after we had a freakishly warm March followed by a cold, often freezing April. I think it did more damage than good but that is just my gut feeling as I didn't have any plants that I didn't cut to see if they performed better.
