On my. That must have ben some effort. And its not THAT easy as you still have to get those bulbs covered and that is work in itself. Its going to be the old dig and plant method for me.

I am moving clumps of in bloom daffodils today. This fall I will be doing a massive redo of the front yard daylily planterbox garden to make it into a spring bulb display at least as nice as the one on the other side of the front yard. Have it all planned out already. So these clumps need to move. Fortunatly I have some empty spots in a row of backyard daffs that I am filling in with my moved daffodil clumps.

I have never moved daffs while they were blooming before but it seems to be going ok.

Well, I have some places with daffs in a row like at the back of a garden against a wall. For some reason there are some empty spots in those rows. But I have them just about totally filled now with moved in bloom daffs.

Thanks everyone!

If I find them , I'll try 'King Alfred'. Also, I found some Daff varieties said to grow well in "the South". So I'm thinking they must not need a very cold winter.

Nothing personal but I am starting to hate the King Alfred, Grumbling the foliage is very tall and it flopped over onto the other plants. Grumbling ~I have to go out with the scissors, like today in the rain, and trim them down, like I am not supposed to do this early. Grumbling Hopefully someone can help me find a shorter one that will not flop over and make a big mess. Grumbling Maybe it is time to give some tulips a try, Green Grin! Rita's looks nice and short. Hummmm~ Lovey dubby

Do you have short daffs?? I know your tulips are short and so maybe they would be better, especially the yellow ones. Green Grin!

Those yellow tulips are a Greigii division called Goldwest. They are really stunning. Buy yes, I have shorter daffs. Just can't remember the names of them.

So I have to move a 50' row of bulbs. Can I dig them up right after they are done blooming? I will probably do them whenever I have the time, but when is the optimal time? And can I just replant right away or do I have to dry them and wait until fall to replant?

No, you can't dig them up right after blooming. The old bulb is spent, it made this years bloom. Now the folliage has to die back naturally in order for a new bulb to form.

That was my problem, you are supposed to wait till the foliage dies or turns yellow and then prune or dig whatever. I don't care about mine I am just tired of the mess. See how they are flopping all over?? Grumbling

I know, just thought there might be some shorter ones that might not flop so badly. I am tired of it and I might replace them with something or nothing. I have a lot more plants now and it might be better to do a separate bed. I think I will try tulips and see what happens.

I experimented a couple years ago with cutting one clump and leaving the other to die down naturally, and did not notice any difference the following year in either vigor or bloom. Both clumps are King Alfreds on the north side of my barn. Ever since then, I cut the foliage back to about 6" as soon as it gets unruly (i.e., flopping onto the neighbors). That allows my successive bluebells to shine, and the ferns following the bluebells to not get lost in daffodil ick. I also get a lot of volunteer Maianthemum in those beds and they blend nicely with both the ferns and bluebells. Here's a progression of one of the barn beds: Feb - March - May - looks like I need one in April to catch the bluebells.
