Ideally and dry place with bright light, not sun would be best.
These were about ready to go out in the beds. They had new roots growing and had been acclimated to the sun. As you can see, they were kept on the dry side.

Wanted to show you all some of the conditions that many of these alpine plants derived from...cold, windy, snowy for much of the year, and harsh sun!
This is from the Olympic Mountains 2007 we hiked up to a place called Buckhorn peak - spectacular views!

One more, then back to your regular programming! Sticking tongue out In this photo the green you see along the plateau are sedums and other low growing alpine plants

Thank you Greg! Those views are so peaceful. Reminds me of the Rockies I visited in Colorado.
Lynn, I dont really have a place for them but in the house. I have to leave for work so I hope they will be ok today. I will replant them all when I get home in dry mix since we wont be getting any more rain for a few days. Dont know what more i can do until I move in a month Crying

Just keep them on the dry side and they should make it until your move.

Chris, how do you keep your new ones safe until time to plant outdoors?

Wish I had a garage, but will have to make do with what I have,

for which I am very thankful. I could be in an apartment with only a balcony or 3 x 5 patio.

And this time next year I may be. Then I will understand what downsizing really means.

Well if it makes you feel any better Marilyn I am currently living in a very nice modular home but moving into an actual house with a nice sized yard and a basement + garage for the HD. I do love my place but just isnt quite big enough. Plus I have my 12 year old son and my step daughter who is also 12 and a cat and dog. We just need a little more room here and we will be happy. Downsizing isnt always a bad thing at all. Less to clean too!

Jennifer, I do believe in previous posts this was named Autumn Joy Hurray!

Ok, Updates on my Lynn Babies.....I spent all evening replanting all my babies in terracotta pots that my hubby brought home for me today Hurray! I picked all the dead dried leaves or mushy leaves off and added more chicken grit to my mix and planted them in dry mix. It is supposed to be sunny for the next 4 days at the least so we shall see how they do. I have them where they will just receive some morning sun and then a bit during the evening. They were really not doing good at all...but I did find that there were lots of babies under the mushy leaves.

Good for you, Jackie. You are being a good mama, doing all you can with what you have and calling all cars to get all the advice you can. Not much else you can do except keep watchful eye. I think Lynn would be proud of you, your passion, and your loving interest in these plants that we hold dear too. We have all gone thru these trials and one does come out stronger and wiser to be good caretakers of these plants that give us so much joy. Hurray! Group hug

Yea for a hubby that brings home pots. Hurray! Hurray!

I am thinking of moving my plants to either terracotta, porcelain or hypertufa versus plastic or other materials.

I think they will do better overwinter and perhaps the roots will not get so hot in the heat of the summer.

Tomorrow is supposed to be sunny and warm and I am going to try to pot up some of my new plants.

I think i can keep them from freezing in the snow that is planned midweek by covering them in bubble wrap supported by patio furniture.

What do you think?

Awww thank you for the kind words Bev. I am trying and Im sure that in time I will be able to figure out what these need as far as Michigan weather goes. When I move and am able to offer my plants more options I will start feeling better. But you are definitely right. It does put me at ease to take care of my plants and make sure they look beautiful. Sometimes it is hard work but I love to learn and love all of you for helping me to start my new succulent collection.

Marilyn, I noticed your semps are laying on some bubble wrap. I would give it a go and see how they do. As many have said they are quite hardy and as long as they dont sit in moist soil for to long they should bounce back regardless. I can't wait to see what you do with them and how they grow. Im sure when they start producing babies I will need you to share with me Big Grin Whistling

Marilyn, are you talking bubble wrap as a cover on top? I would be worried about plastic on top of plants. And are you closer to sun than sea level or even Denver which is 5000+ altitude in which case sun is more intense? Would you consider shade cloth? It is more breathable.

Oh good point Bev. The bubble wrap would probably act sorta like a greenhouse and might get to hot and toast them? Glad you are here to keep us from frying our babies.... how much is that shade cloth anyways? Does it come with a prop of some sort?

Shade cloth can be purchase off a roll and so you tell the clerk how much you want to buy depending on how much you need or you can buy a small roll of it. You just use it like a blanket to cover your plants. The thing is to not let the cold air freeze the exposed leaves. It is the water in the leaves that freezes. I just drape the shade cloth over the top of my plants. It would also help if where you put the plants for the winter that it is close to a wall so that the cold air doesn't hit the plants from so many sides. This is why I place the plants during winter close to one side of the house. I have heard other people advise not to have plants sitting on top of tables or shelves as that is another side (the underside) where cold air is. I also tend to group all my plants close together during the winter so that they are all in one place to throw the cloth over and to uncover them.
Last point, shade cloth lasts for years if you take care to put them away and air dry them if in heavy rain. Like the saying goes about things looking crappy if put away wet...I fold up all my shade and frost cloth neatly away every post winter.
Hope this helps.

Awesome info Bev.....now where would one get a roll of shade cloth? Lowes maybe or would it need to be from an actual greenhouse? What do you do with the ones that you have in beds? Wondering if I put mine in beds they would be ok not being close to the house but having the cloth over them to help protect them. How do they last all winter if the leaves freeze.....very interesting.

Jackie what dedication!! Rolling on the floor laughing
Marilyn, I had to downsize when moving into this place, a studio apartment with no private deck or patio, all shared...now I'm taking all that space over Hilarious!
Happy thoughts regarding that, in many ways, its easier, but it is also emotional! nodding
