Thanks for the acorn LG, that was so nice of you.

So many times those squirrels and other rodents go after seeds. When you plant seeds just as they crack open they don't have that super hard outer coating yet and can break dormancy sooner.

You guys are making me more excited about spring, just seeing all your photos. I can't wait!!

You grow some of the nicest seedlings, Tracey! I still remember the gorgeous tree peonies seedlings that you posted earlier in the year and last year. I hope mine will look as nice someday.

Thanks Lg! I did have some tree seedlings from a couple of years ago but unfortunately, my sister thought they were weeds and pulled them. Sad Sad I have a few seedlings from Carnation Bouquet X Lemon Chiffon and some Lemon Chiffon X unknown that did germinate last year. It will be a few more years before they bloom though.

Found some more pics of seedlings that I bought on Ebay when I first started getting into peonies. Many are single pinks and whites.

All the ones in the foreground are seedlings. I planted a bunch of roots together so they look mixed together.

Annie - indeed it could take two years just to break dormancy but remember it will typically take five to six years to see blooms (which most likely won't be like its mature blooms) Strangely (for me) tree peonies usually reach bloom size earlier than herbaceous peonies.

This is a seedling from my garden. I waited more than 5+ yrs to see her first bloom 3-4 yrs ago. I expect couple of new seedlings that might have their first blooms this year. Hurray!

Congratulations ST52, it is such a very special day when those long awaited seedling first bloom. That's a nice one too. I remember a friend of mine saying he had never ever seen an ugly tree peony seedling. He wasn't sure if it was possible. Well, if anyone out there has an ugly TP seedling, please post it sometime. I am still waiting to prove him wrong. Hilarious!

Karen those are nice Ebay finds. What a great way to start out your peony collection. Do you still grow them? They look nice! Thanks for sharing.

Karen, what a nice variety of seedlings!

Tracey, I like your attitude that there is never an ugly tree peony seedling!

ST, I would be thrilled to have such a beautiful seedling. Congrats!!

Wow I love this one! Can you get seeds from any peony or is it just the tree peonies

Ruthanna - to answer your questions - no and no Sighing! Not every peony, whether a TP or herbaceous, is fertile both ways (pod and pollen) and some peonies do not have pollen but will set seed. Many peony nurseries will say whether a cultivar is fertile and sometimes the data in the APS Registry will give fertility info.

In one of the peony threads someone commented on their blooms closing up at night. This is a seedling that does that but every morning, when it opens up again, it is a bigger bloom Hurray! Has anyone else noticed that?

Thanks Rizzo for your comments on my seedling.

Many peonies produce seed of both herbaceous and tree peony types. Some do not as Val mentioned. Solaris Farms is really great on pointing out if a peony is fertile one way or another, which is nice.

I find many single peonies are prone to closing up in the evening. I like evening or early morning lighting for photographing peonies and I realize evening photos for singles seldom work due to the closing up feature.

Val, I have not noticed that they are bigger when they open back up. I will check it out this year.

That is a gorgeous seedling!

Thanks LG. I must admit it is the only single I have noticed in my gardens that gets so much bigger; first blooms are lovely but dare I say it, fairly ordinary Rolling my eyes. Then as they get bigger it is a real standout.

Tracey, if Solaris indicates a tree peony is fertile, what does that mean, do we plant the seeds down, I ordered a Beach Comber and that's in the description.

SoCal when talking about peony fertility, it means it's ability to make seed or that it's pollen is fertile.
In the case of Beach Comber it is both seed and pollen fertile. That means it has potential to make seed with other pollen fertile tree peonies.

Does that help answer your question?

Thanks, so I just crossed the pollen with another fertile tree peony and I should get a seedling form that seed. How do we get a seedling from 2 fertile tree peonies is my question. I might like to try my newest hobby.

SoCal - if you have the time you could check out the APS website or just Google it, but if you don't I would recommend you leave it to the bees Crossing Fingers!
