Woody peonies are otherwise known as tree peonies.

Rock garden peonies tend to be shorter, smaller flowered varieties suitable for rock gardens, often with fern leaf foliage. Don't need to be grown in a rock garden, do just fine in front of landscape, mainly due to their size.

Hopefully others will chime in here too.

Ruth, do you mean Rockii vs Tree peonies or rock garden peonies vs. tree peonies?

I too love the fading on your seedling, Val! I like the look of it reminding me of Tranquil Dove.

Some 30-something peony species may be herbaceous or woody peonies (also called tree peonies). Herbaceous peonies are perennial plants whose leaves die during the cold winter months, as most of the peonies live in temperate climate zones. Woody peonies are bushes whose trunks and branches servive winters.

Rock peonies are peonies suitable for planting in rock gardens. Thus, we can plant both herbaceous and woody peonies in our rock gardens, assuming that the peonies are of the right size for the rock garden and that they like the soil/gravel in the rock garden.
For example, you could look at some pictures of tree peonies growing in the wild (in China). You could see that some of them are growing practically from the rocks:

Here are some beautiful herbacious peonies growing on limestone in an open highland:

As Tracey suggested, it is important to figure out which peonies to plant in rock gardens. After all, you don't have to plant them in a rock garden, as most of them will be happy in any garden bed with the soil that is neutral or mildy alkaline. Most herbacious peonies need lots of sun and light. Woody peonies, in general, do not need that much sun to bloom. And, of course, there are always exceptions, such as woodland (herbacious) peonies form Japan that prefers shade:

Hope this will help you decide which peonies to plant and where Smiling

Not in California, they don't like our strong sun. Maybe itohs will do well. But I'm leaving the herbaceous peonies that I planted last year where they are, I give them one more season.

Well, Lemon Chiffon just keeps on giving Hurray! This is another seedling from LC that opened a few days ago; it's actually a peach colour and also very fragrant, like a rose.

Thank You! all - this is turning out to be a good year for peonies here. This one is a seedling I have been watching because of the side buds (these are all on one stem) and no support required;

Six hours later and one of the six side buds is already opening - I would have preferred later as I like side buds to extend the bloom by weeks not days Rolling on the floor laughing
