Save Money: Buy Clearance Plants

By GigiAdeniumPlumeria

I find myself looking at clearance racks more often these days, especially after I discovered I can easily make them into beautiful plants for a fraction of the original price. All it takes is a little tender loving care.

This is my $3 azalea on March 30, 2012.

I planted it yesterday, and almost broke my back. Poor thing was rootbound in that large pot. TLC really *does* work wonders! Thumbs up

I must be living under a rock, because yesterday was the first time I noticed the clearance rack at Lowes. Granted, I don't shop much there. But I was stunned about how nice the plants look, you know, for being clearance items!

This is great news for me, because my gardening budget is tight this year. I still consider myself a novice gardener, but I can certainly try to give lots of TLC to 'not so perfect' plants!!!! Lovey dubby

Going over there today to scoop up some nicely priced succulents!

I'm a newbie too Smiling and my garden budget is always tight so got to do a little convincing to DH that clearance plants are the way to go. Clearance plants works for me because I get satisfaction when I can revive them and doesn't hurt my pocket that much when they don't.

Mamalve, I purchased some clearance succulent plants also and I just posted a separate thread of my clearance plants before and after photos.

BluePoppy, I also saw those gorgeous tree Hydrangeas for $15 too in our Lowes. But I don't have the shade that they love : Sad so I can just admire them for now.

When I next have any discretionary funds (?!? Hilarious! ) I will be headed first to the Lowes on Galloway at I30 in Mesquite. They consistently have THE best clearance selections of any stores in my area. Noticed that the quantity and pricing varies so much at each of the four stores within easy reach of me and I've been thinking what goes on clearance may be dependent on the individual garden department managers. If you don't find anything 'good' at one and have any others in reasonable drive, might be worthwhile to visit one or more of them.

I have the shade, but hydrangeas aren't practical here unless one is willing to hand water every day during July and August. And I'm not. Sticking tongue out (Our drought water restrictions only allow sprinklers once or twice a week, depending on the city).

My Lowe's doesn't give away free pots (not that I need them - I have lots of empties in my garage). They told me that they return them for money.

Didn't know they gave away trays.
Welcome to the Agastache and Salvias Forum!

The Lowes here keep a rack close by the door. People will bring back their pots and trays, others will take them. Good system. Thumbs up

There's a swap place on Nantucket that works on the same system. They call it:

Our Lowes returns the trays and pots back to the vendors but they don't mind if you get one or two :). I accidentally discovered it buying plants and i asked if I could buy an extra used tray and used pots. They just gave them to me. I love the trays because it helps me get organized and it is easy to move one tray than 12 little pots:).
