The search has not gone well. I've been trying to obtain two moss roses: Crested Moss (Rosa 'Crested Moss') and Old Pink Moss (Rosa 'Centifolia Muscosa'). When do I find them listed by rose suppliers, they are sold out. When I add my name to the notification lists, I never hear a peep. These old varieties seem to sell out quickly.

Does anyone grow these old beauties and would you be willing to share stem cuttings in the spring/early summer
Thanks.....

Looks like High Country Roses are updating their inventory in January.
At least it's happened in January this year.

You might want to call them to double check. You can also use some software monitoring the updates on web sites not to miss when the sale is open.

I have used https://sken.io/
They have free trail and also an option how often you need to check website. I was hunting for Palatine roses and wanted to check every 30 min. Was lucky that they have opened the sale on Dec 1 and I was within trail mode. My recommendation is to highlight the whole area around your rose to monitor. Hope it's not that crazy demand.
Good luck and let me know if you have any questions how to use this app. Smiling

This looks like a good thread to ask some questions about the care of OGR's...In the little public garden where I volunteer, there are several OGR's such as Mme., Isaac Perriere, Variegata de Bologna, Old Blush (Parson's Pink, Monthly rose); Barbara's Pasture Rose (a "found" OGR that is actually thought to be La Reine); Paul Neyron. So I am wondering how these are treated the same or differently than modern HT's/Fl., mini.s, etc., when it comes their care, especially fertilizing. I am advised to keep them confined to what I consider a small border space (maybe 5'X5'X5' or less for each one). Also do you remove all of the previous year's foliage before new spring growth as is done with HT's? Any other major do's or don't's that are different than care for modern roses? Thank You!

Hi REH,
The category OGR is really diverse, so looking up info for size on the specific varieties that you want to grow will tell you whether or not you can keep them to the compact size you envision. Remember than in Sacramento a lot of roses will grow to enormous sizes -- far larger than they will get in places with colder winters and less sun. Some OGRs have similar care to hybrid teas, but other OGRs are once-blooming and should only be pruned after they bloom. Other OGRs (like many teas, for example) don't love pruning and prefer to only have dead wood cut away. I suggest doing some google searches on the specific varieties that you want to grow and seeing what other people say about how big they get in your region and how they like to be pruned.

The plant database here is a good source of information and often has comments added by members with experience growing the particular rose.

My hunt for the common moss rose has been partially nostalgic (my mother grew this rose) and because I love it's fragrance and am fascinated by it's mossy form.

What I remember of her grow method - in a long and sometimes harsh northern winter climate: This rose was planted in zone 4b next to the sun warmed concrete foundation of our house with a south exposure and protected from winter winds by large lilac bushes. Dead canes were cut out each spring before leaf buds began to swell and I remember her pruning the entire bush to the ground only one time after a particularly brutal (down to -40F) winter.

This rose never grew much taller than 4 ft with 2 to 2.5"blossoms, but it readily spread by suckering. Year after year it grew and blossomed - a little hardy trooper.

Hmmmm.....the saga of getting this rose from High Country continues. The shipping date has been pushed back twice to date. Staff was responsive to my questions via the first two emails. Response is: the rose is too small to ship with not enough root growth - it's on a continuous feed system and is now getting the sunlight it needs.

The last update I received is that the rose was supposed to be shipped last week. To date it is a no show. Now my question regarding when it will be shipped is in the weeds with the crickets. No response. My need to know it's ship date is a physical issue due to our mailbox not being close at hand or checked every day.

1. I've read good reviews about High Country
2. I understand this is a busy time of the year for plant vendors and growers.
3. I am willing to wait for this specific rose, but no communication could be a deal breaker for future purchases.
Sad is me - so looking forward to getting and growing this rose.

JG ~ Believe them when they say a plant is too small to ship. It wasn't a rose, but I received 2 very small plugs just stuck in a pot and a couple of very nice size plants..go figure. They should not advertise a plant in stock if it isn't ready to ship. So if they have a tiny cutting of the rose you want, just keep in touch with them. They were not consistent in my last order. I haven't ordered anything from them in quite a while. I think they are new owners.

I'm not aware of any changes in ownership; at least, no change is mentioned on their website at https://www.highcountryroses.c....

Yes...making the phone call is next. I'll give them another couple weeks and I agree about not listing plants for sale if they aren't ready to ship. Evidently, both of the roses I've ordered are new-ish cuttings.

Small plug size plants can be fine if they are sold as "starter" plants. This spring I ordered some amazing, hard to find herb plant starters- plug size and they are growing like crazy. Their roots, when they arrived filled the soil plugs without being overgrown or circling.

Ah well ~sigh....the travails of growing and my lack of patience. I have to look at this as when the roses do arrive, their planting will be all the sweeter. Lovey dubby

High Country Roses enjoys a strong reputation here on the forum. In my estimation, it's good that they're being honest about the size of the root and giving it time to mature before sending it out. Just like people, growth rates of individual plants can't be predicted with absolute certainty; some will just take a little longer than others.
