Thank you Marilyn! That's exactly what I need --- feedback. I would love to find one like that which is all yellow for naturalizing in the fields ie: sun, sun & more sun AND for under the pecan trees which is sun, sun, sun UNTIL the pecans put on their leaves & then it is shifting sun. The pecans put on their leaves around April.

I have never lived anywhere without winter so have no experience --none-- growing daffs in the south
However,
I have read that all of the tazetta types are supposed to do well
Minnow is super cute--but it is little and white
Scarlet Gem is a yellow one w/ orange cup just like Geranium, wonderfully fragrant. I have them mixed together but cannot access the hard-drive with those photos right now-- here they are separate. The orange cup color gets deeper with age and quite vibrant
Thumb of 2014-08-05/dirtdorphins/d8598e

And this one is all yellow, smells great, and supposedly good for the south

Thumb of 2014-08-05/dirtdorphins/4bb81e

Anyway, they all bake in my sun just fine!
(I'll see if I can find better pics of the Scarlet Gem later. Reminds me that summer happened and I never finished spring picture processing Hilarious! )

OHG says Trevithian is good here too so you are picking well!

Hilarious! don't we all
but hey--they multiply Smiling

I lied--didn't mean to--sorry, but the orange cups fade on the yellow ones. I was mis-remembering. It was all the fresh new later flowers with the vibrant orange cups!

Ann, those are great choices! 'Geranium' is one of my all time favorites, they increase beautifully. Not sure how they perform in the deeper south, but 'Hawera' is a great naturalizer here, and bloom late in the season too. Keep that in mind while positioning them- they're short and can easily get lost in that explosion of growth of late spring- assuming you crowd things like I do, LOL.

Marilyn, I've been placing orders here and there throughout the summer. I realized I don't really want many large quantities this year, but rather have been more into adding "starter clumps" of 3-5 bulbs of various varieties I've been interested in. Ordered Beersheeba, Broughshane, Colleen Bawn, Irene Copeland, N. Moschatus, Mrs. Backhouse, Louise DeColigny, Mary Copeland, Mrs. Langtry, and N gayii- Princeps from Old House Gardens. And from Brent&Becky's I have Monal, Orange Sunset, Pinza, Serola, Smiling Sun, Tickled Pinkeen, Altruist, Jamestown, Suave, Green Eyed Lady, Wave, Double Smiles, Candy Princess, Thalia Sun, Orange Comet, Wisley, Beautiful Eyes, Blushing Lady, Sweet Love, Sweet Smiles, Sweetness, Aspasia, Chinita, Cragford, and Falconet ordered.

Thanks for that info. Neal. It helps a lot with me making up my mind. As much as I would like it, I think I'm going to have to pass on the Hawera because they're so short. Since I'm not putting any of them in "gardens" but rather naturalizing them in the fields; then I'm afraid shorter ones, especially later blooming ones, will get lost in the growth of everything else.

I'm going to up my order of Geranium for sure.

I like very tiny flowering bulbs. Can anyone guide me as to which daffodils are miniature ones? Any help would be appreciated. I had one a very long time ago that only grew three inches tall and the entire little daffodil was no bigger than a pencil eraser. Needless to say, moving so many other plants when moving living quarters you forget some things. It seems like I forgot some of my favorites in that move.

terrible picture, but gives a reference for size

and 'New Baby'--didn't bloom for me this year but leaves very slender, looked like blades of grass, about 6 inches high

Dirtdorphins, you can imagine how many times the list got shaved down in deciding, LOL! The good thing is these days if I do want a large area planted in a single variety, I just dig and divide some of the prolific performers for the spot, and know what to expect from them beforehand. It's been fun realizing I started with 5 or 10 bulbs of various varieties that I now have growing all over the place.

Marilyn, I forgot to answer your question about dividing, but that was in June as the foliage was drying off, and that's when I dig them. Sometimes I go ahead and replant them, and they don't seem to mind, but usually I just bag them till fall. It's easier to see where to plant when the garden is cleaned up in fall, and that's when I'll have other bulbs I'll be pairing them with.
