My husband is working on digging out a bush that we hate. The thing just won't die, no matter how many time we shop it down to ground level, it just pops back up in the spring. He is working on digging out as many roots as he can. In his excavation process, he has dug up at least 60 daffodil bulbs. I want to put as many of them as possible back in the same spot since I can see them out the kitchen window & then walk past them every morning on my way to work. Nothing beats a happy, yellow daffodil on a chilly spring morning. Anyway, how long can I safely leave the bulbs out of the ground? I'm not sure how long this digging project will last & if I need to find new places through the yard to plant them I can.

Shouldn't be a problem if left out for enough time to finish your project.

Hi all. I just found this thread. I had a short row of daffys for several years then noticed this year, thought there were tons of plants, no flowers. I finally dug them up and found that the entire row was solid bulbs. From tiny to 1" and a bit bigger. The original bulbs were larger, about 3" and were no where to be seen. Now I have a bucket full of these bulbs. Not sure what to do with them. Guess I could plant the bigger ones and just pitch the babies. I am running out of room for flowers. I guess I could just run a zig zag ditch through the larger garden and drop bulbs helter skelter. I imagine even if they land sideways or upside down they will grow. I will be busy digging dahlia tubers, replanting lilies that needed dividing, planting new lilies and peonies. That on top of general cleanup. So not much time with hard frosts coming every few nights.

Terri, have your Daffodil bulbs started rooting? I've been doing a lot of digging the last few days, and when I unearth Daffs I'm seeing root growth. If they're rooting, they've broken dormancy and should get back in the ground ASAP. Otherwise, no hurry.

Mary, I have noticed the same thing about bulb size when I divide Daffs- my blooming sized bulbs are less than half the size of those I originally planted. They're perfectly fine. I believe it's because conditions in Holland are perfect for encouraging plants to produce large bulbs (soft, sandy soil), and they're never allowed to become crowded when under commercial cultivation.

While those big bulbs are impressive, I wish new Daffodil bulbs were smaller- it would make them so much easier to plant! LOL

Recovered Daffodil bulbs to plant this fall. These were all forced inside last winter, after the foliage dies back, the pots are moved into the garage and kept dry. When late September arrives, it's time to depot the forcers for transplanting into the garden to bloom next spring. I think there's 17 varieties recovered.

Yes, at least a hundred. (75% daffodils, 25% tulips appx.).
Then, when Brent and Becky's have their half off sale just after Thanksgiving... more.

Hi. I just found this thread.: I posted this question somewhere else a few days ago but was wondering,
Has anyone ordered bulbs from ADR lately?
Did you have a problem with incomplete orders and after communicating only get half of what was requested ?

Marilyn, I recall discussing Daffs with bronze-orange petals and brick red to orange cups, and found a tag in the garden that reminded me the name of a good one- 'Kedron'. It's a jonquilla, so it's nicely fragrant and multiplies well.
