Remind me, 'Lazy Lady' is also called something else. What is the other name for it? It's pretty. Just don't care for this name.

It's a new version of one of the old de Graaff Harlequin series from the 1950's--but I don't know which one without checking the old de Graaff books. I believe that whole series will be reintroduced in near term. This one is really pretty with great petal substance. It will do well here--I have it planted in full sun.

Beautifull, large flower--but fades rapidly in full sun. the flower on the right is only one day old. This lily would do better in dappled shade and would go well with a dark red such as Red Alert. Planted Fall, 2012. I'll keep it just for that.

Fiery Belles (Aurelian X Asiatic)

Thumb of 2013-07-17/Roosterlorn/58b409

Thumb of 2013-07-17/Roosterlorn/fde7db Purchased from The Lily Nook in the Fall of 2011 and planted in full sun, Fiery Belles pretty much lives up to it's name. You really need be close to appreciate this plants colors and quality. From a distance (and to a casual viewer, this would be 'just another orange lily'). It is a very bright orange and literally lights up at early dawn and late dusk, when others can't even be seen. It's a keeper for sure. The color photo on The Lily Nook website is surprizingly accurate.

Yes, that's it, Brian. They look very much alike. I think Lazy Lady came before Chocolate Canary so there must be enough difference to command a different name, though. I have both. My Chocolate Canary will be out in a few days.

Edit added: I think Connie may have more to add about these two cultivars.

Yeah, sure... my two cents worth. I have grown both side by side and can't tell the difference. My Chocolate Canary. These are the only photos I have:

Yes, 'Chocolate Canary' is exactly what was slipping my mind. I was wondering if was another hybrid gone overseas to be renamed. Whistling Sounds like it.

de Graaff makes no referrence in either of his books to Lazy Lady as it might relate to the Harlequin Hybrids. According to B&D, Lazy Lady was bred by the Dutch and is the first of a series of several heirloom types to come out of trials, all of which will resemble the old Harlequin Hybrids. It's interesting to note that the original seeds which led to the development of the Harlequins came from Luthur Burbank. And, while de Graaff and the Oregon Bulb Farm hold credit for developing and marketing it it, they don't deserve it all. Much of the development work was done by a Dr Patterson of Canada and another U.S. grower (who's name escapes me) who also were given seed by Burbank. All three growers discovered this colorfull group at the same time from Burbank's seed.
