Individual swaps are fine, too. I want to try Red Velvet and some other minis eventually, but next year or 3 years from now, no rush!

I have dwarf tomatoes in 22" containers with reduced soil volume and a water reservoir... I put an upside-down pot into the empty container, covered with piece of plastic bag (so dirt wouldn't go through its drainage holes). Then I put a small handful of large water crystals into the bottom of the container before adding potting mix. I drilled drainage holes a couple inches up the side, probably 1.5 inches above the inside bottom of the pot. The perched water table should come no higher than the overturned pot, leaving plenty of well-drained moist potting mix for the plant. So far, so good!

I plannted all my 16 micro tom seedlings in ground today. They are so small I can barely see them above the mulch!!!
6 Orange Hat
6 Rosy Finch
4 Micro Tina

I hope they grow. This is an experiment for me to see if I like these types.

Great interview on NPR's weekly science program, Science Friday, with Craig LeHoullier, the Dwarf Tomato Project's co-founder, from early June, in case anyone missed it. 12- minute listen or read the transcript. He talks about the origins of the project, tomato culture, and gives a terrific plug to our own Dave and Victory Seeds.

Apologies if this has been linked previously.

First ripe tomato today on any of my Dwarf Tomato Project plants. A beautiful large Stoney Brook Heart. Gave it to my friend that brought me a home made sticky bun. I figgure it is a good trade and I will have more dwarf project fruits.

Oh geez. I guess Iwas not prepaired for how tiny these things are. I am used to my indeterminates in the back garden that are as high as my 6 foot tall Texas Tomato Cages. And here these micro things are that I did plant in the ground that might be 2 inches tall!!! I have to be really careful that I don't accedentally step on them.

No flowers but then they are too small. And they seem to be growing really slowely. So far I don't see why people like them so much but we will see.

I guess if you don't have much room these are the way to go.

Maybe they belong in pots on balconies.

I've grown them in the ground but really, they do seem to like containers.

Well, you have some good varieties. The seed you're working with came from my own hand and they will do well for you. You're a couple months away from tasting any of them. Micro-Tina is new for us this year and I produced the seed from truly ancient (20+ year old) seed from Mike. It's a good tomato, but crazy how small it is. Orange Hat is a good producer. Rosy Finch is also good, and that one performs the best in the ground, and gives the biggest fruit of them all.

Wow, that is impresive that the seeds came from you.

I am afraid these tomatoes will be too tiny to please me but we will see. Really it is just a fun experiment for me. It is not like I really need tomatoes from these plants. But I saw good reviews so wanted to try.

I just did not want to set up more containers, I had plenty of ground space they could go in.

My first ripe Rosella Crimson had BER, but I sliced the top off and ate it anyway. It was DELICIOUS! So sweet!! The plant is about 3 feet tall in about 5 gallons of potting mix (I had bigger containers so took up some space in the bottom with an overturned pot, then drilled the containers 1-2" up the side to create a water reservoir. )

I feel the same way as you. The micros are fun but they aren't big full size tomatoes.

I enjoy growing them but they don't give the same satisfaction that other varieties provide. I think of micros as a good winter tomato under growlights, which is something they really shine at. I love eating tomatoes in January! Grin Grin Grin I've been working toward some new hybrids that will be smaller, more on the micro size, while retaining the large fruit size and good tomato taste. Maybe in 2025 or 2026 we'll have some new intros for people to get excited about.

I don't really have a spot in my house with enough sun in any window for indoor plants. So would have to do lights. And that is something I just do not want to do. However, having fresh tomatoes in January is very appealing!!

Not ripe enough to eat but ready to pick so I picked the first Dwarf Beauty King. Very pretty so I hope it is as tasty as it is pretty.

I have to pick before tomatoes get much ripe as the bug and critter pressure to damage them is a lot this year. Maybe the heat and humidity has brought out all the bugs.

And ants have been getting into anyone that splits. Then I have to toss it as an ant infested tomato is gross!!

Some of my Dwarf Project plants are making ripe tomatoes. Today was my taste test for Dwarf Beauty King and Adelaide Festival. Both really stunning tomatoes and both very tasty.

One of the things I really love about my tomatoes from The Dwarf Tomato Project is how pretty these tomatoes are. I have many with stripes and swirls.

I have been picking ripe tomatoes. One striking one is called Metallica. And then there is Adelaide Festival. Beauty wize and taste wize a really great one is Dwarf Beauy King. It is pretty and so delicious.

Today noticed first bloom on one of my Micro Tomatoes. And another plant has one that should open tomorrow. These are on two of my Micro Tina Plants.

A mixed review so far. Some plants literally have not grown at all. Some look like they are struggling to hold on. While a few others have added boh height and width and look really good.
