I did all my spraying even the tomatoes. But they went quickly cause they are small.

Anyone know if beans cross polinate? Last year I had green pole beans and three types of yard long beans. I didn't dare keep seed because I figgured they might cross. At the least the yard longs with each other. This year I only have one type of yard long. They were all three very good but I found I very much preferred the one type. So I am planting only my favorite yard longs this year. And I have bush green beans cause that is what type of seed I had.

Exciting! I wonder if I grew just a couple in pots if I could keep ahead of the squash bugs? Hmm, I'll have to experiment.

Arlene,

You can just keep them covered until female blooms appear. Then you only need to check on them after that. I'd have no squash plants without early cover.

I did try covering...didn't work. Maybe I peeked too much? Hilarious! But I'll cover again. I did plant some again this year.

Did you cover starting at the time you planted the seed? I've tried covering later and it didn't work well for me either. I think the bugs got there before I did.

Last year I did. This year I didn't. But I just planted the seed three days ago. I plan on covering tomorrow. I also have seedlings to set out. I'll put them in a different spot and cover immediately. Let's see what happens!

Last year a farmer told me to plant them three times. Third time to wait a month or two after the first two, so about July. I did. No squash bugs and I finally got some summer squash!

Oh me. I am just hopeless. I went to the local in town nursery to buy potting mix. Well, I did buy that but also bought a 4 pack of Lady Bell Peppers. Bought them because I like green bells and the plants were big and looked really great. Bigger than my peppers in ground already. I have slug damage on my Cubanelle peppers. Now I have 6 of them, 4 are okay with minor damage but two look ready to bite the dust. So I figgure I needed replacement peppers. But I couldn't make myself dig up and toss those two poor peppers so I am still thinking on what I will do. But I now own 4 more peppers!

>> Anyone know if beans cross pollinate?

I only know what I read, but that says "mostly not". I found a pretty reliable source, a senior member of SSE.

http://forums.seedsavers.org/s...

That link supported my belief that, if you have a ton of bumblebees and no other nectar source, you may get some crossing. However, if this i9s for home use and not breeding or selling, go for it! So what if you have to cut down one F2 plant in 20, or not save F3 seeds from that one plant?

Another senior SSE member in the same thread quoted: seedsave.org:

beans: http://www.seedsave.org/issi/9...

Per www.seedsave.org, "Although, ideally, different varieties should be separated by 150 feet or another crop flowering at the same time, we rarely observe cross-pollination even when two varieties are grown next to each other."

I took the day off from veggie garden work. Today I just weeded a bit and planted ornamentals and herbs in the other gardens.

Rick, I have lots and lots of bumble bees here and 150 feet would be a joke. My stuff is always right next to each other.

Chelle, I do love red peppers. Will have to let some of them get red. Smiling
