We had rain Saturday afternoon so I didn't do anything after market. Rain (lots) again on Sunday. Still fighting off this cold and had Dr. Appt. on Monday so today was the first to work in the garden. Picked strawberries and threw away 9 for every 10 picked. Depressing. But if it doesn't rain again for a couple of days we should get a few more to take to market on Sat.

There are about 3-4 heads of broccoli ready to pick. They didn't get as big as last years, but happy they produced at all. Chinese cabbage was ravaged by bugs.(i usually cover all cabbage and broccoli. Not sure why I didn't this year?

Corn and beans are up as well as lots of new weeds. Hilarious! i really need to weed and then dig up my bulb row because I have a feeling I'm going to have to plant some sweet potatoes there. I started my own slips this year and they're getting pretty big.

I can't get the melon/ squash area rototilled because now it's too wet. I really need to get them in the ground soon. My summer squash is up and I broke down and bought two eggplant since mine are so tiny you can barely see them. But the tomatoes and peppers are looking good.

And yet I feel like I haven't gotten very much planted yet. The thing is, in order to have enough for market and for a long enough period, I have to continually be planting something. I don't know if I mentioned it, but our market is year round. Now, i needed a break for winter but we did attend up to the end of November. If I had the energy we could have done greens all winter.

I'll upload some pics in a bit. We don't have cages for all so we run a cable end to end and tie up the ones with no cages. I sure hope they run the cable for me this week!

>> and 150 feet would be a joke

Yup. The other number cited on that thread was "25 feet". The distances cited are meaningless unless they also say what their target is: less than 1% cross-pollination, or less than 0.001%.

For home crop use, probably 5% to 10% would be acceptable, and 3% would be fine.
I often wonder what level is average in hobby seed traders - 10%? 30%? 50%?

One guy who trades hot pepper seeds adds "not isolated". I'm guessing he has mixed rows or blocks of pots with 10-20 varieties check-by-jowl. But peppers also have perfect, mostly-self-Pollenizing flowers.

(I read somewhere that they call it "pollenizing" instead of pollinating when the pollen never gets outside the bloom, but just goes direct from anther to stigma.
http://www.amnh.org/learn/biod... )

I think about cross-pollination with wind and insect-pollinated plants, not self-pollenizing ones. But then I'm not a breeder or commercial vendor or conservator of rare heirlooms.

Once I tried to start many species of Salvia in the front yard, or the back yard, avoiding having two varieties of the same species in the same part of the yard. But almost the only ones that came up were several varieties of S. coccinea that were forced into the same bed due to lack of room. Oh, well! Then I had to move the bed that had the most variety and best isolation. Grumble.

When I want to save somewhat-pure petunia seeds, I plant those in pots and planters, then move them as far apart as possible and deadhead thoroughly for a while. Then let them go. But they cross a lot anyway.

Arlene, you have more energy than I do. I need my winter rest!

Rick, yes, my stuff is side by side. Even 25 feet away is a joke in this garden.

In my garden, the machine-gunned Chinese cabbage would be slug damage. Is that your pest, too?

Here are my Lady Bell Peppers before I planted them. I did manage to find a spot in ground for them and they are all planted. They are really nice sized big seedlings so I just had to buy them! Hope they do well. It had been years since I have grown bell peppers. No peppers at all for the past few years and then I had the Cubanelle frying peppers before that.

The reason I bought them is because they are so much bigger than the pepper plants I already have here which have been planted out for a while already. But here there is a big nursery with an excellent selection of pepper plants. No point in going thru the trouble of starting pepper seeds. Plus my favorite in town nursery seems to have a more limited selection but those are ones the big nursery doesn't have. So lots of pepper plants to choose from.

They are nice looking peppers. You are going to enjoy them.

I started mine from seed so I can get the varieties I like and they are so slow, but the good news is, since planting out, much warmer weather and plenty of rain so even though they're smaller, they are doing really well.

Lettuce row looks tidy, ha! Cram them together so no weeds can grow. I'm in the battle with the weeds everywhere else though! I need more straw!!!!!

Finially got to planting out my sunflowers that I grew myself from seed. I didn't have any last year as I just didn't get to starting seed. I have 9 sunflowers so that should be plenty. I love sunflowers as I think they are so pretty. Plus they draw the goldfinches. They come check out those flower heads as soon as they see them bloom. And are eating on them as soon as the seeds start to ripen.
