This is my Anthurium seedling hotel. I made it to keep the rodents outta my stuff. The true babies (germinated seeds and very young plants) stay in here until they are ready to be potted up in 2" solo cups. In winter this goes inside the greenhouse, it comes back out in Spring so that the plants can get the full benefit of the heat, rain and air flow

Well, I decided to host another houseplant event for library in September. And said I wouldnt promise plants but make it a swap, people bring stuff. That idea lasted just until I got home

Mini garden needed a trim. And the tall stem on top came from elsewhere. I'm going to go stick these in a couple empty pots @ my mom's house. She's been gone all week so that should be a nice surprise.

Dracaena 'Florida Beauty' stems stuck in the ground in the spring. I though they were dead, all the leaves fell off but all 3 have decided to live it looks like.

I'm having trouble propagating Pothos. It will root fine if I put a cutting in to water but if I transfer it to compose it dies. If I attempt to root Pothos in compose if fails. So my next plan is instead of taking a cutting I'm going to lay a Pothos vine in some compost and see if it takes root that way to make another plant.

My guess would be the compost might be the issue although it is well draining with plenty of perlite. How do other people propagate Pothos?

That should work well, propagating before cutting. I usually start them in water because when I've put stems directly in soil before, most of the leaves fall off before new ones start growing.

When putting water-rooted snips in the new pot, I put a few inches of soil on the bottom, arrange the cuttings, then finish filling the pot with soil. Then water very thoroughly but with a gentle sprinkle. The first few times a newly potted plant is watered are critical for the success of the pot because if a gush of water is used, the soil will be instantly compacted and the plant or cuttings will be at a disadvantage from the first day. If the soil settles to a lower level, that means all of the air is gone and it will be a struggle for the roots to get enough oxygen.

Trying to stick rooted cuttings into a hole can rip off the roots.

The reason it declines after you let it form water roots and then put it into a soil mix is because water roots are useless. They are weak and fragile and not suited to immediately begin growing in soil. They have never toughened up from having to grow through a substrate and seek water. It's best to just put the cuttings immediately into soil.

I live in the woods Colleen. We have a lot of wildlife, and that includes rats and field mice. I never had a problem with them before this year. For some reason they found my greenhouse and like to eat things like new ginger and heliconia shoots, the berries developing on my Anthuriums and the new very small seeds and seedlings. I started protecting my seed crops and sprouting seeds with this cage. We also have squirrels that do the same thing. I haven't figured out how to get rid of them yet.
I don't poison, because that only kills other wildlife. The bird/coyote/snake/fox that eats the poisoned rat/mouse will also die. I trap with humane live traps and drive the mice 10 miles away and release them in the woods somewhere else

I have tried putting the cuttings straight into soil but they always die. Today I came across a garden center and they root there pothos cuttings in small bags with a bit of damp compost so I may try that technique.

So I'm going to try this technique, I took some tip cuttings, they look like leaf cuttings but there is stem in there its just hidden by the compost. I'm using a cactus mix that is damp and sealed in bags.

I wonder if this will work... only time will tell. They will be in a sunny window.

Tip cuttings are usually referred to as top cuts. Because they contain the apical meristem.
This is how I prop stuff like philodendrons, Epipremnums and Monsteras. Section up with at LEAST 2 preferably 3 nodes per section, strip the lower leaves and bury all but the last node in soil mix
