Here is a view of the prolif taken a few days ago. I have made a little "pot" using aluminum foil and put potting soil in it to try to get a good root system.

Ann, do you do anything to the proliferation first? I know when air layering a hardwood the cut the branch before putting the moistened moss on it.

Kim, I have Lemon Go Lightly and love the bloom but my camera can't handle that bright yellow. You did a great job capturing the color.

flaflwrgrl, I have a pod on the scape of Buffalo Thunder on which the prolif is growing and I don't want to cut the scape just yet. It was a huge prolif very quickly and I am amazed that it has seven buds. These are full size blooms. I have some registered daylilies that don't have a bud count that high. Thanks, dormantsrule for explaining the air layering technique. Rooting prolifs in water will make roots, but the way I understand it, those rooted in water have what is called water roots and when you plant them, they then have to make new soil roots. I am trying to get a good root system by making my little foil pot and filling it with potting soil. I do have to put a little water in those foil pots every other day or so, but the prolif is still getting nourishment from the mother plant.

The color of Alabama Jubilee is awesome. It needs to meet Sun Scream pollen. ☺☺

JWWC, we cross posted. I read Dan Trimmer's article in the Daylily Journal and followed most of what he said. I sprayed the base of the prolif with water, then brushed on rooting hormone. Then I positioned my aluminum foil and used a twist tie to hold the bottom of it in place. I then placed my moistened potting mix in the foil "pot" and closed it. On some of my prolifs, all I needed to close the foil pot was just adjusting the foil. I had to redo some, add more potting mix and use another twist tie to keep it closed. Dan showed photos of huge root systems when rooting the prolifs this way. He left the foil pots in place for 5-6 weeks, I think he said. I root mine in water all the time and I get regular roots...not the water roots. But I leave them on the scape until it's half brown and the reg. roots have already started developing from the nourishment of the mother plant. I don't bother with the foil pots or anything for giving the prolifs extra water either and have not had any issues. As soon as the regular roots are of a decent size, I put them in the ground. I find this really easy and it has worked everytime; haven't lost a prolif yet. I also know some people just cut them off the scape and plop them direct into the soil with no problems.

Michele - Those are some killers! Crowning Fire and Tides Roll In really got my attention, and I always love Dragonfly Tattoo and Waves of Joy!

I sure wish I had gotten Crowing Fire instead of Cherry Ice Cream Smiles. All very pretty. I also like that perfect little Lemon Drop
