Natalie: Wow, that is a great little video! Thumbs up I LOVE those hills and mountains! I live in an area of Florida that is very flat and I'd love to have some hills ... and big boulders too! Green Grin! I hope you eventually get wildflowers to grow there ... to my eyes that is already a beautiful spot but I know it would be really pretty covered in wildflowers too!

Thanks Lin. I learned many years ago that I'm not happy unless I live near mountains. I wouldn't exactly call this are mountainous, but it's close enough.

This was the view out my front window in Utah. It's not the same here, but everything else about this place is a million times better, so I was okay with giving up the view. I think it's the only reason we stayed in Utah as long as we did.

Wow! Stunning. I can see how that would be hard to give up but your "cliff" will be covered in wildflowers and the view if the valley is gorgeous too.

I also gave up a lot of snow, and got two zones warmer than I was! It was a good trade! I also lost 3,000 feet in elevation, so I'm happy about that!

I really didn't stand in the right spot to take that video, since the river doesn't show up. We need to cut down 3 trees to open the view up some, but haven't walked down to them yet to see if they are actually on our property, or the next piece of property. I sure hope they are our trees, because the river view will be much better!

Natalie, is this your first season in Idaho? If so, you may be pleasantly surprised to see what grows on its own in your wild areas. We quit running livestock on our property several years ago and each year I see more native plants getting a foothold on their own. I continue to try to encourage more by sowing wild flower seed, and like you, I'm a bit impatient in that department.

I hope you find the offending trees are on your property, or can perhaps get permission to remove from the owners if not. Selectively opening views can be inspiring.

Natalie,
I saw in another post you are familiar with Diane's. I know for sure I got coreopsis from her and I think the ruella. She has lots of seeds that would work well. Perhaps you could even email her for suggestions.

Deb, we've only been moved in completely for two weeks now, so I'm still figuring things out. We were here for a couple of weeks in April to clean the place up after the sellers moved out, but nothing at all was growing at the time. It rained every day, so I thought it was a good time to toss those seeds.

We came up here in January of this year for the very first time to go fishing, and fell so in love with the area that we bought a house! We knew we wanted to move somewhere around here, but had ruled out the other places we had visited. So, this area was just the next one on the list. We didn't expect much, but enjoyed it so much that Mark didn't even fish! We just drove around and figured out which house we wanted. It was a great trip too, getting to see what winter was like. Winters aren't bad at all, and that pretty much sealed the deal for us! Now if our house in Utah will sell fast, that would be wonderful!

Jennifer, I do plan on e-mailing Diane. She's a wonderful seller, and is so happy to help with suggestions. I love her lightening fast shipping, too! I just need to find a little time to go through the list of seeds that she has, to see what I'm interested in.

By the way, I've been to Diane's house, and her plants are amazing! I haven't seen the daylily garden, but the rest is spectacular. She has a real gift for growing plants. I had many of the same plants that she has, but her plants were about 10 times taller than mine, for the same exact plant.

Betty, here is her web site
http://www.dianeseeds.com/

She also sells daylilies, and daylily seeds. I've bought almost all of my daylilies from her, and they were outstanding. I've only bought Morning Glory seeds from her, but they were great seeds. My Dad has bought a lot of seeds from her, and they have done really well. He lives in Oregon, in a much colder zone, and she was very helpful to him when he was picking out seeds to purchase. I picked up all of my daylilies at her house, which was great, because I'd dig the holes ahead of time and pick them up the day she dug them, then went home, soaked them for an hour, then put them in the ground. I doubt I needed to soak them, but I did anyway. She was also very honest about how the daylilies did for her, which I really appreciated! There were a couple expensive ones that I was thinking of getting, and she told me that they hadn't grown that well for her. She isn't just out to make a sale. She is out to make her customers happy, and I'm a very happy customer!

Hubby and I were walking around the property tonight, trying to decide where to start fencing things in at, and I found a wonderful flat spot I hadn't noticed before! Hurray! It's is over the edge just a tiny bit, and easy to get to. I told him that I WILL be filling that up with flowers soon! I didn't think I'd ever find a place to start putting in new flower beds, so I'm excited to have noticed this spot. I doubt I'll ever make it to every inch of the property, but I'm glad we wandered around tonight!

I just read a wonderful article on Diane's Seeds website, and thought I'd share the link to it. It's on self-sowing annuals, and I'm going to purchase some of them from her. It's a really great read, and doesn't take long.

Great article! Also I love your video and the hill side has great possibilities. For me Dead Nettle is something that reseeds like crazy. It blooms very early spring, almost what I would call winter so it is too cold to get out there and I believe it is already dropping seeds for next year by the time I get out there. Grumbling
However, dead nettle is editable and full of antioxidants and vitamins. Some people do grow it as a vegetable. It has beautiful purple flowers that look a little like an orchid when you enlarge the picture.

I just put a rather large seed order in with Diane. I wrote to her late last night and asked for her opinion on the seeds I had chosen. She got back to me and said everything looked great. She was also nice enough to share the link to her favorite bulk wildflower seller, which I appreciated! She's such a nice person! I'm sure I'll be buying some bulk seed too, since I have a huge area to cover. It's a lot cheaper that way, as well. Thumbs up Check out the site for the bulk seeds. It's a great site, and I think the prices are really good! http://shop.wildseedfarms.com/

She recommended a second site too, but I can't get it to load. I'll try again later. http://www.groworganic.com/see...

Susan, I had lots of dead nettle in Utah, and I adored it, but left it behind because the ones that I had needed a bit of shade to look their best. I never noticed them reseeding, but they did spread. However, it never spread bad enough that I considered it invasive, and it was very easy to pull. I had purple, pink and white flowers, but they weren't the same one that was in the link that you posted. I also had a yellow one that was horribly invasive, tough as nails, and tried to take over everything in the yard! I spent the last few years hacking away at it by hand and with the lawn mower, and never got it completely removed. Can't remember the name of the yellow one. I had no idea that you could eat it!

My next plan, with the seeds I purchased today, is to start a lot of them in containers, and then transplant them. I think that way I may have better luck at getting things rolling!

Your hill side is beautiful just the way it is, but I can see your vision of it covered with wildflowers. Some of the mixes look great. The things that reseed all too well for me include the malvas, feverfew, cleome, cosmos, marigolds and morning glories. I do think your idea of collecting seeds from wildflowers you see blooming in your area is probably the surest way to go. Can't wait to see your place in a couple years.

Thanks so much Susan! I'm probably crazy for having this dream of mine, but I'm determined to get something growing. I really appreciate the list. I think I ordered all of those last night except the morning glory, but I already have those.

Natalie, another plant to consider is annual candytuft, I forget the latin name. Various colors of purple and white, more lanky than perennial candytuft. I planted that quite a long time ago and it reseeded itself nicely. Not sure what happened to it, likely I weeded it out.
