Thanks all. Novak was new this year so I'm wondering if that's why the stunted stem. But it does look kind of cool. Luckily I have a few other smaller ones that aren't coning.

Not happy any more! My dog ran thru and the patch collapsed because it was a giant ants nest underneath! I've pulled them all out. Will start again, sigh

I have never seen as many ants everywhere as we have this year. It's crazy!

Jennifer, at least with the ant nest under your plants, there was a little "give" when your dog ran through so they didn't get crushed. Hilarious!

Am attaching two photos of the bloomstalks that are almost blooming on 'Weirdo'. It never bloomed for me in MA but I have three stalks on it this year in OR. admittedly this has been a WEIRD year here in OR. Blooms are starting much earlier and we are now having record heat.

Anyway, the photos show some of the weird curved leaves on the stem and the buds showing flowers with a linear symmetry rather than circular/ I'll be fascinated to see how the petals and sexual parts are affected when the flower opens.

And Chris I couldn't agree with you more about the ants! I have baits allover the yard. Our winter was fairly mild so I'm wondering if more survived this year.

OK here's the pictures.

Kevin

I am noticing the ants everywhere in the raised beds this year. I'll have to go get some ant bait. I don't mind a few, but this is crazy this year.

Kevin, can't wait to see the blooms open. What are you going to cross it with?

Think I'll try crossing 'Weirdo' with some big reds and purples. if 'Plastic' was out I'd use it too but that bloom is a long way off.

Have my paper bags already for crossing!

Can you save the pollen and use it on Plastic? Or does the parent plant have a greater influence on the seedling?
I know nothing about how genetics work?

Lynn,

Yes you can save the pollen. I use little plastic microfuge tubes that I can sore in the refrigerator. The pollen is good for ~1 month. I do prefer using fresh pollen though. This warm weather is making the anthers dehisce earlier so I can do crosses earlier in the morning.

Too bad 'Oddity' isn't going to bloom as I would love to see the 'Oddity' X ' Weirdo' cross. Those could be some seriously strange plants. Even selfing 'Weirdo' might be interesting.

Kevin, I am not positive, but it looks like I have three blooming stalks coming on Oddity. This will be a first for me if they are bloom stalks.
Three stalks that appear to be bloom stalks?

And two of these odd Oddity offsets growing in the hill. I've never had them look like this.

Well I am not sure this is a bloomer or not I think it may be headed that direction so wanted to see one bloom.

I got this at the nursery the other day name is Jade Rose. The chicks look a bit on the small side so I hope if it does bloom they have a chance to develop before the mother plant dies.

Does this plant look like it is going to bloom to you guys?

Thanks,

John
