I've been too busy dealing with the extra work involved with this cold weather, so I haven't been on here much, but wow. So many wonderful things to see. Some great ones coming. I hope to see one introduced soon that looks like 07-176B. I'm sure one will pop up one of these years that meets the criteria of perfection. To many beauties to comment on all of them, and I have to get busy now.

I don't have all of his older pictures saved on my laptop but I did find 1 picture of the 2 parents of 12-100D and there pedigrees Big Grin as you probably guessed they come from 07-176B it really is one incredible breeder for colors and patterns .. I thought I would show some of his work with the 2 parents over the years and some of the fun things that bloomed from them obviously he is generations past them now but really cool combinations of colors on these.

Fantastic! I did not know that 12-100D originated from seedling 07-176 B (and on the paternal and maternal lines), and I did not even guess, since it is almost monophonic. But intuition told me that there must be something familiar and beloved in the pedigree) The descendants from 07-176B are really all amazing. Despite the poor branching and difficulties with fixing it, this is a real treasure for the hybridizer.
It turns out that I have descendants from seedling 09-93 A (Pastel Pattern) and from seedling 09-90 A (Turkish Tapestry). That's another reason to cross them together! I wanted to do this last year, but the flood at the end of May prevented me from doing it..

Derylin..

07-176B will not get introduced it has branching issues which were passed onto a lot of the kids shown above the flowers are gorgeous but has been a long term project for him to keep the color and add a really good branch to it. The branching is improving in the next generations Crossing Fingers! something from the 21-105 cross shown above will have show branching in the near future..

Elsa.. He is Definitely the Plicata King Green Grin! and Thank you it's nice to get out of the cold for awhile and take a break from work..

Tom..Hang in there if your forecast is anything like Iowas next week will feel like a heat wave 40's and 50's almost T-shirt weather for the midwest Smiling a couple more months and things will start to wake up again getting closer to show time..

Serjio.. Hopefully the bloom for you next year both are fertile especially Turkish Tapestry I have done quite a few crosses with it the past few years got a feeling it is going to make some unique patterns and colors Smiling Don't forget (Hold The Line) it's in the same family and will give you some fun things to work with.. If you have not bought (Central Intelligence) and (Covert Caper) I would recommend both they have extremely good branching and strong stems .. Central Intelligence sets pods easily.. is pollen fertile, and it's loaded with buds.. I set 6 pods on 1 stem with it, currently using it try to add branching to some of my things that are lacking Smiling

I hope the majority of your plants survived your flooding as you know we have had some disappointing seasons too makes you really appreciate the good years .. one of the reasons I started using berms at home was we were having drainage issues in both of our homes so I trenched in lots of corrugated tubing underground to help and brought in loads of a mix of sand/compost and black dirt so plants were a foot off the ground and dryed out quicker.. maybe not feasible for you in your property just an idea but raised bets may help you in the future .. The one thing I can't do anything about is the cold and freeze/ thaw we get in the late winter months its tough on plants adding mulch has helped tremendously with winter protection ..mine are currently buried in multiple feet of snow and the temps have had wind chills in the -20 range ..we haven't had a winter like this one in quite awhile definitely makes me envious of the lucky guys that get to hybridize in California and Oregon nodding

They just keep getting better and better. 18-72A (Desert Trails X 13-21A) is amazing, looks like it has a bit of the daisy pattern on a plicata with a bit of a rim on the standards.

18-61A (Desert Trails X Western Outlaw) This one is great too!

17-2A (Desert Trails x 13-17J) sib to Upscale This one gives me heart palpitations. Hilarious!

18-57B Desert Trails X 11-70A (Fire Danger X 07-176B) Nice!

Thanks! Hold The Line has not bloomed yet, it should bloom this year. Central Intelligence and Covert Caper have not yet been acquired. Maybe next season. I hope they will still be on sale. By the way, I've been wanting to ask about Turkish Tapestry for a long time. He's wearing a blue top in your photos. I've never had it like this (and my friends, who I've seen it bloom, too). How often does he show the blue coloration of the standards?
Fortunately, the losses from the flood were small. I lost about a dozen varieties and several dozen seedlings. This is nothing compared to your disaster about 5 years ago, when almost all the irises died there in your new field during the winter (from botrytis?). I would have given up on that.. I admire your enthusiasm and love for irises.

last year we bought a plot of land in the mountains and after the flood built a house there and moved with all the property and plants. Now the clay soil here is quite difficult (and virgin), and I have to use sand, imported chernozem or humus. But there is a slope here, so there will never be a flood.
The climate here is also not very mild, although we live in the south of the country, just on the border between zones 6b and 7a. There is usually a lot of precipitation in winter and spring. Moreover, in winter mainly in the form of rains, I have already observed a thunderstorm here three times in winter! In January, there were temperature differences from +16 C to -16 C. now the frost is -4 C and about 25 cm of snow

The seedlings from 'Desert Trails' are simply amazing, I have no words! Thank you for sharing the photos. I managed to get 21 seeds from the (Desert Trail X Turkish Tapestry) crossing last season, now I will be even more impatient

P.S. I'm sorry, if anything, for mistakes, this is an automatic translator

Tom.. He has some amazing Plic's from Desert Trails he really hit the jackpot with the 18-66 kids there awesome my favorite is A shown earlier it's nice!

Derylin.. It is a work in progress many many crosses and years of work to get those colors on a show stem and we will get it eventually just going to have to hit the right combination between the 2 of us working on the project it will happen in the meantime there are so many fun things blooming from it 07-176B is an amazing parent ! I think were getting closer..

Robin.. Your welcome Smiling we need something to look at here to get us through the winter months and glad I can help out this year.

Curtis.. It's done really well in Iowa and I'm excited to see some more of the crosses bloom from it.

Serjio.. The translator is good comes across perfect.. I don't have all my pictures with me but here are some more on Turkish Tapestry it looks like it opens with the violet fades to a pink and then a tan as the flower ages.. all of these were taken in Keith's garden over a couple year period and everything looks better there it really is a perfect climate for iris .. I'm not sure if I get the same color intensity at home with it versus there as I normally don't photograph a lot of name things at home once they start blooming I get twitchy fingers and start pollen daubing nodding my camera does have a tenacity to show more blue but it definitely opens with the violet look in standards..

Your cross with Desert Trails will be interesting lot's of good things in the pedigree of those plants ! I'm glad you made it out of the flood without to much loss normally when things go bad here they go real bad quickly .. I'm still unsure of what happened that year but I go the extra step to give them winter protection now there getting a good test this winter -20's and lot's of snow hoping the worst of it is behind us and the weather will stay mellow in February.

You have confirmed my guesses, so, indeed, the color shades of Turkish Tapestry depend on the soil or climate. Here, even at the beginning of flowering, it does not have a purple hue on the standards. Let's see how he behaves in a new place, what if?

for two years in a row, I went to another collector of irises (Natalia Ternova), it's about 12 hours by train, to visit for a couple of days to make crosses of irises. She has a newer collection of irises, more new varieties. And with shaking fingers, I am torn between the desire to photograph and the desire to pollinate beautiful irises. Big Grin

Keppel's new luminatas are simply amazing. They are probably taller than the luminatas of previous decades, and they have more buds. Well, progress in terms of the shape of the flower is also obvious.

Last season, inspired by your publications, I put some emphasis on luminates and plicates. Here are the crosses that produced the seeds:

He has really improved everything about them the 1st one that really caught my eye years ago was (Moonglint) I remember thinking wow he's added wide overlapping falls and ruffles to a luminata and it has show stems Lovey dubby the breakthrough looks like some crosses done in 2011 ..11-162 (Wishes Granted X 05-78A) which is the parent of Moonglint and True Colors it was a sib to Volcanic Glow and almost identical but must have been a better breeder. In the same year you had the 11-59 cross (Arrivderci X 05-78A) which has produced Nevertheless, Netizen, Unstained, & Immaculate heart an amazing abundance of breeding material with endless possibilities which has really lit a fire under me to start working these lines..

I am impressed with your crosses should be some good things in there but especially the number of them you did if I'm reading this right you made 541 crosses last year Thumbs up are you for hire Smiling that's a lot of seedlings to line out.. I certainly tried to do that many seems like I get 1 out of 4 crosses to take sometimes a little better but that's probably a normal for us here .. between Dad and I last year we ended up with 274 crosses with an average of 35 seeds a cross so doing the math if 60% germinate which is about normal will give us about 6000 seedlings to line out in May which will be plenty to babysit for me for the year nodding
