OK. Exactly how much water can these elephant ears drink when in a nice big well draining pot?! Right now the one I have is in an 18 inch pot and is easily drinking 3 gallons a day. This is in addition to the steady rainfall we have been getting all spring and summer here in Eastern Tennessee. Got three more coming from Brian's Botanicals this week. The one I have was planted from a bag of shade plant bulbs my wife pickup up at Costco. It's growing like a weed and all the new leaves are bigger than the last.

Yup, we need to know the Genus at least Dave. Some are happy in standing water, some not.

Depending how warm the weather is, down here I found it nearly impossible to over-water my E-ears. As yours, they were in nice, big well-draining pots and unless it rained, I was watering them 2 gallons, twice a day when the weather was in the 90's. You probably will get hotter weather than we do for at least some of the summer.

This summer, I have given most of them away, and something else is in the big pots, so the remaining EEars are all in one pot, sitting under a downspout. It has been raining cats and dogs almost every day for the last two weeks, so they're getting drowned, and loving it!

Here is a link to a photo I posted in the aroids thread. I need to post a new photo as it has grown quite a lot. This photo was from two weeks ago. There is now another leaf between the two taller ones in this photo that is twice as large as the biggest leaf on this plant.

Homer identified it as C. esculenta Mammoth. Just on the info you guys have given me thus far it doesn't seem like I can water it too much with the well draining soil and pot that it is in.

I've never been able to over water these. I purchased several oil drain pans, a watering trough, kitty litter containers, ... all to provide a deep water well under large pots.

Took a couple of photos today to show the progression of this plant. Sorry for the image quality. I put my hand on the newest leaf as to give some reference to size. I cannot believe how this plant has grown in just the last 2 weeks or so. While taking the photos I noticed that a new leaf is emerging.

I agree with Evan, Dave those are some wonderful leaves, big and a beautiful color.

Speaking of color, I found my little start of C. Lime Zinger - a flash of (guess what??) lime green out in the jungle caught my eye, and there it was! Desperately in need of a new pot and some fert, but otherwise, twice the size it was last time I saw it. Thanks to the rain and cool weather, not to me. Whistling This brings my Ear collection up to 6 - if you count Hilo Beauty and the little Jewel. (sorry for the lousy pic, it was almost dark)

Here's an elephant ear for you. I can't say much about it. My mother planted it and that put's it on the high side of forty years old.

I particularly love all the aerial roots. That thick, short green 'shoot' at the grow point is actually a closed flower.

It lives along a north facing wall and has been well neglected. It now enjoys more light as we removed an adjacent walkway trellis recently.

Here's an overview of the bed. Don't let the picture fool you. The elephant ear is a beast that has carved out a big space among the nandinas.

That is a Philodendron, not an Elephant Ear. Beautiful specimen!

Ah, yes. The generational passage of misinformation. Thank you for the correction. I'll have to look up its details someday soon.

It's still a beautiful plant and amazing how long you've had it! Welcome to ATP. Let us see what other plants you have out there! Must be nice not to have to take everything in when winter's coming.

It might be a Monstera deliciosa, in which case that long green shoot coming up is the fruit and edible (and, I've been told, delicious...). Keep us posted!

I believe your plant to be, P. bipinnatifidum w/ inflorescence.

The plant in my profile picture is a Monstera deliciosa.
