I am gonna wake up the thread again a bit, it got silent here nodding

So i have put two smaller alocasia in my bedroom because its slowly getting really cold.

Gibby my alocasia mac is pushing a healthy looking leaf.

Thumb of 2016-09-28/foussi/8d2d29

And i put my really pregnant young small odora in my bedroom because i think it wouldnt resist the cold so much.

I have a question? How do you overwinter your alocasias.

I let mine have their leafs and put them in the hallway.
I dont want them to lose their leafs because i heard its hard to cause them to sprout again.

I wait for a frost, than cut off the dead leaves, place the container in a cool basement and water minimally through out the winter, come spring back out in the garden.

Perfect timing on this post! I picked up a bunch earlier in the year from the Lowes clearance racks. They're doing great in their pots. Usually, I've taken the 'bulb' out of the pot and stored them inside for the winter. Come spring, I pot 'em up again and let them do their thing.

I have a mixed of both alocasia and calocasia. A couple of our neighbors actually leave them in the ground year round. We haven't found the right spot for them yet, so we just leave them in the pots. This year though, we actually sank a couple of the pots into the ground.

Other than what I've been doing or trying what crawgarden does, anyone have any thoughts on leaving them planted in the ground here in zone 7?

Thanks

Do you already put them outside?

Mine survived the winter pretty good, some shrunk and some lost leafs except my portora that deciced to go dormant and rot into goop, AGAIN.

My first time to grow elephant ears and enjoying it. I got them from another NGA member jmorth last July. They started growing nicely when our much awaited winter rains started to show up here. Glad to have them and still observing how they go. They sure are thirsty and really loves staying beside our fountain so it catches some of the water too:

This container is a mixed bag, it may have some lilies there too, but the elephant ears are growing much faster. I want to observe more keenly now how it survives our dry summer heat and forward. Thankfully our Spring this year seems to have extended cool period, though some days of higher temps slowly trying to show, but overall, still a cooler Spring with some rains in early Spring compared to previous years.

Ohh these EEs look really pretty.

They grow REALLY fast. Like 1 leaf after 3 days.

Goodluck with them :)
But they are rather difficult to overwinter.

I am still here brother. Down to a couple elephant ears and a few philos but I just bought a greenhouse so I will be able to expand my tropical selection quite a bit. I am a sucker for those big ole leaves. Got my eye on this right now http://nsetropicals.com/store/...

I've had a rough couple years...
Basically I've lost 90% or more of the aroids species I had, and probably 95% of the total number of plants... not good...

But, I think I'm ready to give it another go!
I've got some pretty hardy survivors still hanging around, so I've got some plants to play with, but not many, which leaves me wanting ofcourse, doesn't leave much room for error when you're left with one or 2 tiny, not so happy bulbs or mini plants, but I've been pleasantly surprised a few times with what's popped back up... but also left scratching my head at the disappearance of quite a few things.

I can't really spare the cash to buy much, but I do have a few friends that live reasonable close that I can bum plants from, and I don't have alot yet to trade, but I'm working on it!
I'll be forcing plants to pup, as opposed to growing them out into beautiful monsters for this year to get my numbers back up and monitor a few things, with any luck I can interest a few folks into trades that will help me along, but either way, this year will be a recovery year for sure!
I doubt seriously that even have much of a collection by next year, but who knows!

I'm DEFINITELY up for trades but doubtful I can provide enough to be worth it for most folks.
I'd love paying postage if anyone has too much of something, especially if we've traded in the past... I've always tried to spread my plants around in hopes that I'll have a backup if needed... it's helped in the past.

I'll get out and get a few more pics, things seem to be growing ok for the most part.
It's been surprisingly cold here lately.
Highs around 75, lows around 50.
75 is nice... 50 is too cold for both me and the plants, but I'm sure it's better than burning up out west at 125 degrees!
Please tree mail me for trades, I'm ALWAYS actively looking for more new plants, and love to trade!
