So let me understand this, if I have a "portable landing vessel", a cart, wagon or basket, orchids are going to jump in there?!?! Oh, that is great!!! Rolling on the floor laughing Lovey dubby D'Oh!
Let me ask you this. Any orchid that jumps in there is free, or do I need to buy them? Rolling on the floor laughing Hilarious! Angel

I have had this happen to me many times. It is a phenomena called Orchidaceae Leapus. It only happens when an orchid comes in close contact with an orchid aficionado who has not bought a plant in the last six hours, and had no intention on buying an orchid at that moment. In addition to the aforementioned carts and basket types, they have been known to jump into shopping bags, purses, large pockets and if there is a really strong attraction, into the the receiver's hands. In some cases, particularly at orchid shows, this malaise can last for hours.

This is incredible!
I need to purchase an old Army helmet from a surplus store.
Is this Orchidaceae Leapus fatal, or is there a cure? Maybe a vaccine? But since it might not be fatal, the worse case might be growing all of these 'leaping orchids!'
Rolling on the floor laughing I tip my hat to you.

The only way to stop this from happening is to not enter any grocery store, big box store, nursery or floral show where orchids might be present. No, it is not fatal, but those afflicted will notice profuse swelling of their orchid growing areas.

Groan! Smiling

I was going to wait on pictures of my Laelia anceps, but the already opened buds looked pretty in our glorious sunshine today, so I couldn't resist. Some residual ice on the ceiling!
I have it hanging towards the west wall for the buds to open in the same direction, then turned it around temporarily to get some pics of open blooms.

What a lovely plant, Ursula. I've always liked the graceful form of the flowers on the Laelias. Never had any luck growing them, but then, I haven't tried recently so maybe I should go for one again.

Hmm, there are a couple of orchid shows coming up, and I missed the Sarasota one, darn it!

I was thinking about ordering from Paph Paradise (I did order from Andy's), I was thinking I would go to the Sacramento Orchid Show in April, I was thinking I need to stop buying orchids. Pretty soon, Hubby and I will be living on the back porch and the house will look like the Little Shop of Horrors (the greenhouse already does).

Ursula, I'm not sure why your greenhouse looks so neat and tidy with actual space between plants. I would have to fill the spaces. I have filled the spaces and now I'm filling the non-spaces. Sighing!

Lucy, I noticed the space too!
Looking at greenhouse pics from pre 2020, the upper shelves were definitely packed! I always preferred Orchid shopping at shows, rather than do mail order. There were no shows for a couple of years, but every nursery around here sold the nicest succulents, rather cheaply in comparison too. I always grew C&S along with Orchids, Passifloras and other things. But the ratio is nowadays more like 50:50 and the sunny front rooms hold a lot of those plants other than Orchids, many are large!
And many of my old surviving Orchids got large! The whole plant thing has shifted!

The darned plants keep on getting bigger, and bigger too. I had some very large orchids that I divided, and had to find new homes for the pieces of them because while a large specimen orchid plant takes up some space, three or four smaller divisions of the same plant need at least twice as much space . . . It certainly can get out of hand if you also keep on shopping as well as growing.
Lc. Renate in 2020 made 3 large divisions when the basket fell apart.

My buys lately have been mini-Phals from the 'death rack' at Lowes - when an orchid finishes blooming, they don't send them back to the grower, they put them on the clearance rack for half price or less. Nothing I like better than a new orchid at a bargain price.

That's the problem with shopping at the shows for me - they just got SO expensive. Instead of coming home with 4 or 5 new plants, I'd return with maybe one or two, and they really had to be something special.

Nowadays, I do go to the open house events at my local grower, Plantio la Orquidea and he puts bare-root divisions out for very reasonable prices. I've done well with those without a huge outlay of $$.

Elaine, I have visited that Plantio la Orquidea web site. Seems like a good place. Since you are happy with them, I will have to take a closer look. Thanx
