You're probably right about the scallions vs onions issue. Thumbs up
I tend to plant potatoes closer together than I probably should, and also keep adding grass clippings, compost, etc. as they grow, so that would make interplanting them with anything more or less impossible.

Oh, I see some logic there, RpR. Welcome! I tip my hat to you.
Yes the potatoes sprawl!!
I just laid some fall shredded leaf compost around mine today, the greens are starting to grow fast.
Plant it and they will come.

Salad days. April is my slowest month for harvests. Pretty much limited to radish, green onions, spinach and lettuce. I do manage to hunt down enough poke berry for a couple of servings of boiled greens.

Moonshadow just shared this chart of min/max container size for various veggies, thought somebody might find it useful: https://garden.org/thread/view...

Went to sleep on a nice spring night on Thursday, woke up Friday morning to beautiful fluffy christmassy snowfall. Wind, cold and muck all weekend. Guess I'll have to replant the herbs I put outside last week. The peas and lettuce in the outdoor containers aren't doing much, either.
But the baby peppers, eggplants and tomatoes are doing fine. In fact, I'll have to start thinking about potting up the tomatoes pretty soon. I'll put a few of the biggest ones in the grow bags the greengouse. (Sheesh! I either have to repaint this keyboard or learn to touch-type. Painting sounds faster.) Got one old pepper plant and some onions in there already, but I have to reinforce the bottom the of the fence around the enclosure, because that electric eel of a kitten has found a way to wriggle under it and shit in the pots.

Down here, too, we're having a real chilly week for late April. I usually put all my tropicals outside in late April, under trees for shade, as the trees leaf out pretty well by now. I'm sure the garden centers have lots of warm weather starter plants out by now, and doubt there is much cold protection they will do for those racks during this week with some nights down to 40 degreesF. I woke up to 38, actually.
Plant it and they will come.

Cats can get through gaps small enough to fit their head. Everything else about them is so flexible they can make it work. That's your goal - no gaps larger than that kitten's skull.

The problem is finding those invisible gaps under things and behind stuff! I wouldn't even let him into the greenhouse, except Brown Cat lives in there and likes the company.

So now it is that time of year. The time in Spring when I plant my veggie seedlings.

Tomorrow I will start planting out my tomato plants. I have about 80 plants.

Then I need to plant my pepper seedlings. When it is warm enough I will plant my eggplant seedlings and my basils. I have so much basil and it is starting to get big. I plant them in pots.

My zuchinni seeds that I sowed on Tuesday are coming up so when they get big enough those will need planting out also.

If I don't go nuts again and not plant my extra then I should be under 80 tomato plants.

Today I managed to plant 23 in ground. Then water them all in good.

Tomorrow will be back at it but will have to water everything I planted today plas all I plant tomorrow.

It is getting more difficult each spring to crawl around on the ground and get the seedlings planted. So it is going slowely. Doesn't help that the tomato seedling grew like crazy and are extra tall this year. Extra work to dig deeper holes.

I have about 50. Not my fault, exactly; a bunch of them didn't germinate so I planted replacements and then the originals came up. I don't have enough bin space; some will have to go outside and take their chances.
Second planting of herbs is coming up and some nice little melon plants; it's time to start the squashes and cucumbers.
Outside, the peas are finally showing and maybe some lettuce.
Behind every opportunity is a disaster in waiting.

Still a bigger hole, but not necessarily deeper... If I have a good bit of stem to bury, I make a sloping trench. The root ball goes at the deep end, then I lay the stem along the slope and bury everything except the last couple sets of leaves.

This year, I only had to make holes about 4 inches deep to bury the rootball plus an inch or two of the stem... for once, I didn't wait too long to get them in the ground! I just potted up tiny seedlings for another round of plants that should be about ready by our plant swap party (June 1). I did 10 additional varieties so will be trying to find space in the veggie garden or among the perennials for another 20 plants (2 of each). I also started 3 dwarf varieties.

I bought lettuce four packs again, put four plants in a pot on the deck and fertilized right away- looks great! Planning to cut leaves as needed. 2 romaine type and 2 loose leaf or butter head or something like.
Plant it and they will come.

I just plant my bigger tomato plants deeper. Planted 12 tomato plants today.

Then I planted my eggplants. It is warm out and I just wanted to plant them. So I did. 10 plants and I hope they all make it.

I want to plant my peppers. I think I have 15 or so Lola Sweet Banana Peppers. I think I will be starting with those tomorrow.

I found few choices in pepper plants so far. Maybe they got bought up early? Only some hots, and Cal Wonder.
Plant it and they will come.

Every year every place around here has California Wonder. So it must be very popular.

I love Sweet Banana peppers and Lola is a great hybred Swet Banana. Makes so much fruit!!

I managed to find both Gypsy and Carmen (my two favorite sweets) at Black Creek last month, bought 16 of each in bedding packs and up-potted them into 4" pots. Looks like they'll be budding/blooming by the time I set them out! I also started new seeds of both those varieties plus Bounty (sweet banana hybrid), will see what I can find space for. They are just getting their first true leaves, so still very tiny.

I sowed an entire packet of rather old 'Biker Billy Jalapeno' seeds -- and nearly all germinated! So I have far too many of those. Sally, if you want some, I can bring them the next time you're able to join us for lunch!

I agree about the 'Lola' sweet banana peppers - I grew that variety for the first time last year and it was very healthy and productive of beautiful peppers. Thumbs up (I guess I need to remember to put a comment in the database!)
