We are in the upper 80's this week, but by the next week we are going to be creeping steadily into the 90's, I got a yellow squash in a container today, is an experiment to see if it makes it. Haven't figured out yet where the lemon grass is going, but after 1.5"rain in last nights storms, the fireants are showing back up, so tomorro is a retreat of crucial areas where we do NOT need ants moving into.
Ladies, pepper plants are slow to show up, keep your eyes open for next shipments. Gypsy are good little peppers, my insects tell me so. Angel

Squash will do fine in containers. I have two types of yellow with 3" fruit. Also have a couple of butternut squash in containers.

I never buy pepper seedlings anymore. The choice is too poor. It's better and cheaper to order the seeds and start my own. Have three reds, a white, a couple of greens, a purple and some mixed minis which I like for stuffing.
All the first batch of tomatoes need potting up and I'm a little short of space in the nursery tent. Guess they'll be all right on the bench, now the weather's finally warming up.
Today, a great big flock of ladybugs (the nice dark red ones, not the orange mean ones) appeared in my front porch. I have no idea where they were hibernating. I left the door open all afternoon and at least half of them found their way out; I'm hoping some of the remainder will come into my cold house.
Will have to bar the cats from there soon and replace contaminated soil in the bins that were not properly covered. If I'm lazy in fall, I always pay with extra work in spring.
Behind every opportunity is a disaster in waiting.

Weedwhacker said: I agree about the 'Lola' sweet banana peppers - I grew that variety for the first time last year and it was very healthy and productive of beautiful peppers. Thumbs up (I guess I need to remember to put a comment in the database!)

Lola is a really good one. It just sets so many great tasting Sweet Banana peppers!!

I have 15 Lola plants. I did manage to plant 4 of them today but mostly I was planting tomatoes. So I have more Lolas to plant.

note to self... get 'Lola' seeds instead of 'Bounty' next time!

I did start peppers from seed in early March but managed to go just that teeeny bit too long before watering them and lost the whole dang flat! So when I found my 2 favorite hybrids (Gypsy & Carmen) at our favorite Lancaster nursery, I grabbed them. I think they were less than 50 cents each, in little 4-packs. That's still probably twice what it costs to grow them from seed, but still a good deal.

Bummer about losing the whole flat of seedlings, Jill - been there, done that! Crying
(Glad you found some good ones to buy, though!)

I repotted the biggest tomato plants today and turned on the other light. Still a little bit of room in the nursery tent for the rest of them. The peppers are way behind and the eggplants won't need a bigger pot until they're ready to go out in the bins.
Disappointed with the melon starts, though. Three of them didn't germinate at all. Usually, I pre-start them on blotting paper; this time I had faith. More fool me! Maybe I wasn't meant to grow melons - I never have much luck with them.

Lola is a fabulous Sweet Banana type.

I planted 8 more Lolas today but still have 4 more to go. That will make 16 which is all my pepper seedlings. Doing good as usually I do not get them planted this early.

More tomato planting today but still not near finished.

I will be back at it tomorrow. Plant peppers and tomatoes. Also I need to weed all my pots so I can get my basils planted. Maybe start on that tomorrow.

My zuchinni seedlings are doing great. And I have to do something about cucumbers. I have seeds to direct sow. Or maybe sow in cell flats.

Of course my tomato planting is not yet finished. But I did get the last of my pepper seedlings planted today.

Mostly I worked on basil. I weeded my pots and added potting mix. Then planted basil seedlings that I grew myself from seed. I now have 18 pots done and more seedlings to go.

After I get the rest planted I need to sow some more basul as I will still have empty pts to fill.

My zuchinni seedlings are growing fast. And I need to sow some cucumbers.

So much to do right now, and our weather is not being very cooperative with rain nearly every day... I did manage to get 7 'Green Magic' broccoli and 6 'Tiara' cabbage plants put into the garden, as well as snow and snap pea seeds. And started cucumber seeds indoors - plenty for myself and my brothers-in-law. Hoping to at least get the tomatoes planted in the high tunnel in the next couple of days, they are getting too tall under the lights! And the asparagus is coming up and close to ready to start picking Thumbs up .

I have to get out to the cold house and clean those bins where the tomatoes will go. It's warm enough to remove the tarp from the front wall. The seedlings are large and robust enough. Let's go!
Trouble is, my physical energy has been lagging behind the seasonal to-do's. Haven't been able to face lugging buckets of cat-littered soil out to the hill. I tell myself I have to finish the short story collection before I embark on any other project, but it's just an excuse.
Got to the get the old bones moving again!

Yesterday I was so tired out from my week of veggie planting that I did not planr. I did water what needed watering and thats all. Don't know what I will get done tomorrow as the weather calls for rain.

Today I went with my friend to a bunch of nurseries and she was looking for annual flowers.

I was able to buy some cellpacks and I gott more eggplants. And two varietoes of cucumber seedlings.

I stayed away from and tried not to even look at the tomoto plants.

I always look, but they're boring - except one nursery at the north end, which is expensive. Most places have the same four varieties, all red. And the pepper seedlings are California Wonder, Cubanelle or jalapeno - of which they always have lots left over for quick sale. Won't they ever figure out that nobody needs more than two?
Why do I look? Old habit.

I did get my ass in gear for about 20 minutes, to water the nursery, refresh the five bins in the cage and clean up in the greenhouse. Got a tiny start on the back porch as well.
Not much, but there's hope.

My peppers are doing better in their new garden spot, but how do you get Sluggo to not melt before the snails get to it? So many snails on my poor peppers, and garden

I'm going to try using DE (diatomaceous earth) for the slugs this year (probably along with Sluggo).
