The cool wet May so far has been good for my few lettuce in the garden but the same types in a pot on the deck are too lush and soft and floppy. I hope I don't find slugs in the garden lettuce. I'm surrounding them with coffee grounds to see if it seems to repel slugs. Shrug! why not
Plant it and they will come.

I'm growing my lettuce in containers this year to try to avoid the slugs, also some Chinese cabbage. Why can't they do something useful and eat the weeds in the garden?

Eggplants in the outdoor bins. Five more tomatoes planted in cold house. Didn't get much done today, because we had to go into town and that's always tiring, as well as time-consuming.
It's Victoria weekend, which is supposed to be our past-frost-danger date, though I've had a bad frost in June before. Still, most years it a good time to plant outside. The forecast is good; I'll probably start beans in one bin and cucumbers in another. Maybe oustide they won't get mildew.
That's tomorrow. Sunday, I'm due for a birthday outing with no work at all. (I don't care! They can wait a day fps!)

13 tomato plants and 16 pepper plants planted today. I ran out of energy to do any seeds. Those will be cucumbers and yellow squash since my first planting of squash failed. I just may extend the bed I made last year for cukes and put yellow squash next to them but then again I wanted them alone due to the borers. I'll have to see what I can do between all the rain.

That was on top of moving hostas to new homes in other spots and weeding the main hosta bed today. Plus the bit of tilling I did and raking out all the grass clumps. I'm exhausted!!

Today was fertilize veggies day with liquid fertilizer. Using the AgroThrive grow formula for good Spring growth.

I did all the peppers. eggplants, zuchinni and basils. I also did my impatient flower plants. I want pretty flowers and lots of veggies!!

I did do tomato plants but most of my tomato plants are in the big backyard tomato bed. I left those for another day as I could never get it all in one day.

Beautiful onions, Dillard! I haven't even planted mine yet, hoping they will do as well as they did last year; surprisingly (to me) I'm still using onions from last year that haven't sprouted yet -- never previously had them store quite this well Smiling .

Don't let the weeds beat you!
What am I growing? 6 types of lettuce {mostly reds}, corn, peppers (Bells to Carolina Reaper}, bush and pole beans, squash {mostly winter}, tomatoes {mostly non-reds}, carrots, spinach, melons, cucumbers, snap peas, radish, walking and bulb onions, globe basil, mexican mint merigold, black strawflowers, black carnations, zinnias, etc,
And the Lord God planted a garden in Eden. I am follow his example.

Outstanding. I am getting lonely. Full range vegetable gardeners are getting rare. We are aging rapidly.

I would grow more if I had the space and energy. Get too old to do it all but fresh from the garden is just so yummy.

I concentrate on growing things that are $$$$ or just nowhere near the same flavor if store-bought. Heirloom tomatoes, sweet peppers, really fresh green beans, herbs, variable numbers and types of hot peppers... There are other things I'd like to add to that list, but time and space are always factors. This year I added 60 'Mara des Bois' strawberry plants and a couple dozen alpine strawberries (started from seed last year). Yes, I can buy strawberries, but not like these, not even "in season!"

I can find a lot of hot peppers in the grocery store these days, but almost never see things like jalopeno or serrano peppers ripened to red, which is when (IMO) they have the best flavor. Last year, I froze 3 ice cube trays of Thai Dragon chiles mixed with Thai basil, which will last me until next summer!

And I don't need to convince anybody here of the superior flavor of homegrown tomatoes -- even if you grow hybrids rather than heirlooms, they're so much better than store-bought that DH won't even eat tomatoes out of season. My dad used call storebought tomatoes "Samsonite" tomatoes, a reference to the super durable luggage brand.

To night's supper. I grow mostly to try new to me varieties. Unlike commercial growers I am not tied to production but can enjoy taste, texture, and visual appeal. I do note productivity but I don't have to depend on it for a living. For me hobby growing is a lot more satisfying than clubbing a little white ball around a big cow pasture. Even the lowly beet has noticeable differences among varieties. Of course they must go directly from the garden to the cookpot. Fresh does not coordinate with days of travel from the farm to the grocery store.

I've always thought chiogga beets would be beautiful in a canning jar, or would the white stripes just get dyed with red beet juice?
