Edit: is this suppose to mist more than getting the water droplets ?

Mine sprays water up towards the cuttings' stems. You might need to add more light to your cuttings. I left my light on 24 hours a day 7 days a week. This stresses the cuttings and makes them root faster. That's my take from what happened. Don't give up. It took me some failures to have success. Sorry it took so long to respond. I have been so busy this week.

Thank you Clint, I'll give that a try. I tip my hat to you.

Clint,

How much more effective do you think these spray cloners are compared to a more simple water with air stone setup? Got an Aerogarden as a gift and I'm attempting to employ it as a cloner.

I think the reason these are so effective is the cutting stems aren't actually touching the water. They are getting air from an aquarium pump that blows fresh air around that area. The sprayers spray oxygenated water towards the cuttings. This prevents rotting and other issues with cuttings stuck in water.

Yeah, I'm afraid you're right. Still, worth a shot with the Aerogarden laying around anyway.

Have you tried conifers in your clone machine?

@vurbil, I have tried to root in the Aerogarden, and have not had any luck. I wish you all the luck though.

What did you try to root?

All my attempts were miniature roses and once a clematis. Now I made myself a EZ clone, and that thing works great was able to root several cutting of Goldfish plant, it took quite awhile but it worked. Softer cuttings root in just a mater of a week or two. Good luck with your cuttings.

Your experience sounds pretty conclusive. Might be time to invest in an EZ Cloner.

I abandoned my own experiment with the Aerogarden yesterday. After 5 weeks, there was no sign of rooting. Granted, I was trying to root something that I'm not even sure is possible to root (Ashe Juniper aka Mountain Cedar). I think I'll stick to plain old coarse sand or peat/perlite.

I have great success with this method on brugmansias, just finished potting up my second batch that were full of long roots. I also added some passionvine and sky vine cuttings, and some of those are just starting to strike now. Even the ones that haven't struck yet haven't wilted or rotted after more than a month in the water. My setup is a bit crude, just a plastic tub with an aquarium bubbler in it. No added heat but it is under fluorescent lights. I haven't used any rooting hormone since the brugs are so easy. Planning to add some more cuttings once it warms up some.

@TX_hoya love hearing your story. I also had some very good luck. I tried some Goldfish plant it worked but took 4 mo. Please let me know how you did with the Passion Vine would like to try some if it works.

I got all excited when I got my aeroponic cloner. I filled it up with all kinds of stuff and waited for amazing results like the description claimed. Initially I thought it was great, but then I learned that some of the things I had success with are very easy to root. The difficult things didn't root at all. Actually I had more success rooting things in pots with various different soil mixes. I haven't run my cloner for a long time. I might set it up this spring and try another run.

Do I need an airstone bubbling in the tank? My directions didn't say that was necessary. Would it help?

The devices come with air stones and pumps for them. The extra oxygen they create is good for the cuttings. I always use mine. You can also set these up on timers so they spray for so many minutes and turn off for so many minutes. That helps with cuttings that rot easily. It takes time to get the hang of using these machines, but they do work. Some things are more difficult to propagate than others. That is true, but it's not the cloner's fault. That's just the way nature works.

Hardy hibiscus cuttings work every time in my cloner. 100%. They don't take as well in potting mix. I use mine for those a lot.

I just loaded up my cloner last night. I have 15 petunias, 7 phlox, 2 roses, and one weigela. I also have 5 petunias and 5 phlox in Styrofoam cups with my proprietary rooting mix. The cuttings all came from the same donor plants, and they're under the same light, so we'll see which works best.

After 15 days, my cloner run was a failure. Basically all cuttings are rotten. The petunias in soil are 100% successful. Look at how eager the one in the last picture was. It grew roots above the soil.

I might give up on the cloner, but I want to try a few things before I completely give up. I had a longer post about things I was going to try, but I accidentally erased it. No time to do it again, so does anyone else have suggestions?

I've rooted petunias in my cloner before. I always try one or two cuttings of something before trying that many. The main thing is to take a pencil and open the hole in the styrene plant holders bigger. Make sure you have the water spraying well. These should be easy to root this way.
