Something catty happening here. Big NOID catt with sunset colors coming along, although a snail got part of one of the buds. Grumbling

I agree
Gosh, I remember the Slug plague a few years ago! I placed slices of potatoes and apples around pots to collect them the next morning and I armed myself with a salt shaker to kill any that moved about. And I still lost stuff.

It's frustrating, I can't imagine how they are getting into the pool cage, Shrug! but I've nabbed at least 10 since Saturday. One was way up high on a branch of the 8ft. tall brug - I was really wondering what was eating those leaves up there.

I'm definitely going to try the potato slices - thanks. I didn't get any apples yet. Bowls of beer used to attract them when we lived in Salt Lake, but here you get a bowl full of drunken roaches instead of the snails . . . go figger.

Anyway, now I have another pest to worry about - once that catt opens all the way, its perfume will probably attract the goldurned raccoons again! Gotta have orchids that smell like spice cookies, right?? Rolling my eyes.

Also, any old medium/ decomposed bark is a magnet for slugs ( found a Slug in every one of those that year) and I also remember that year switching to anything other but clay pots without a ledge/rim they like to hide under. Smooth pots, baskets whatever. And I then realized Slugs didn't like to crawl through coconut fiber. That helped a lot.
Once it got really warm and dry that Summer, the Slug plague was over.

Btw Beer never worked for me.

Regarding the scented Catt? I would just enjoy it inside then? Sound scummy!!

Well, I have good news and bad news. Good news is, one of my cattleya orchids has two clusters of buds on it so I should have some pics to share soon. Bad news is, Dad was pressure washing the house and apparently moved some of my orchids that were by my window (they were in quarantine). He must have set them out in the sun because they now all have severe sunburns. Like, every leaf of the plant kind of sunburns! I'm so mad at him!

But more good news is that it seems like I finally have the black rot problem under control. Only the ones that were already infected are still showing signs and I set them apart from my other plants a while ago. Bad news is, it looks like I'm going to lose two of them. But I guess that's better than it spreading to my whole collection.

Oh, Melanie that is too bad! They do usually recover from sunburn, though. (the Voice of Experience speaks here . . . ) so don't cut off the leaves just yet. As long as they have some green healthy tissue, they still are making food for the plant. Let the leaves with the burns dry out if you can (under the roof overhang?) and just water the medium on those guys for a few weeks.

I've had both black rot and scale problems this summer. What a headache! Have had good results with Bayer 3-in-1 that has Imidacloprid in it for both the scale and rot. Have sprayed a couple of times with Physan (it takes the algae off the pavers around the orchids, too. Very nice) and every time I see any hint of black I cut it off right away and sprinkle the whole surface of the medium plus the cut generously with cinnamon. The cinnamon seems to deter the accursed snails, too! So far have not lost any plants, but probably a dozen leaves and a few pb's. I did lose a phal while I was away, and there's no sign of rot, so I have no idea what happened to him.

It did rain a little bit last night and another sprinkle just now, but my babies are drying out some, so that will help to quell the fungal growth hopefully. Less rain chance for the rest of this week, Yay! Hurray!

Thanks for the advice Elaine. Most of the leaves still had some green on them so I'll leave them be. If I were to start cutting the plants wouldn't have any leaves left! I just hate that they look so sad and ugly right now.

Oo, they are so lovely, Ted. Mine had a battle with scale, but is putting on lots of new growth now, so I do expect blooms soon, too.

My big catt is fully open now, but not scented yet. I'm worried about bringing it into the house, too. Since at this time of year the a/c runs all the time it is so much cooler and dryer in here. You don't think the climactic shock will make it drop its flowers? Also things from outside bring bugs into the house at this time of year . . ick.

I have my big purple catt Blc. Mem. Hans Graf X Blc. Edisto just hanging fire ready to open, too. Will post them both soon.

Well, I got out the camera to take pictures of my new trellis (see 'I just bought') and couldn't walk by this guy.

Sunburn Melanie? I would have been a tad unhappy there too....

Gotta love the Gerberara, Ted! Lovey dubby

Good advise from Elaine, Melanie. You shall overcome!

Pretty Catt there, Elaine. I too can use a couple of days without rain.

I love the color combo!

How about a very confused Laelia anceps? 3 blooms on short stalk in August? It always blooms in Winter for me on long spikes.

Jim, as color comparison - here is my Habenaria rhodocheila opening a bunch of buds now.
edited to correct (communication Leon Glicenstein) - this is Habenaria erichmichaelii and should be fragrant.
