Jan: Is 'Old Termite' a brown(milk chocolate) colored daylly?

Tonight's temps will fall into the mid 30's. Those daylily's still blooming in the garden, better get out there earmuffs tonight!! There going to need it. These cold nights often occur several times in September. Warmer days will return next week. If the daytime temps reach 60 tomorrow, I will be surprised. Burr. I'm never ready for the big chill.

Today, I bid a fond farewell to two of my favorite redheads. And what a display they put on for me today. I will miss there beautiful faces greeting me each day, while adding so much color to my garden. Last blooms for:

WATERMELON MARTINI - TWINS

Thumb of 2013-09-06/ARoseblush/1982d1 and a close up ->

BARBARA MANDRELL - Every now and then you get a daylily that exceeds your expectations. Barbara has done that very thing for me.

(Picture taken last weekend)

And a complete surprise was to see this daylily on a single rebloom beaming in the sunlight this afternoon. Ivan looks a little chilly but beautiful nonetheless.

CRAZY IVAN

Yes, Old Termite is a milk chocolate color. I have three of that color - Milk Chocolate which is an oldie hybridized in 1967, Coffee House - which I received as a bonus plant from Maryott's last fall. We had such a rough winter and spring this year, I almost lost it and was amazed it even sent up a single scape and bloomed - heck, I never even expected it to survive! (I lost about a dozen cultivars over the winter, including a couple of established ones) and Old Termite, also a bonus, from Bobby Baxter a couple of years ago. Old Termite has been blooming almost continuously since early July this year, and has been wonderful this year.

I wouldn't like an entire garden of this color - but interspersed with all the other colors and being so unique, I really enjoy them. All three have very clear milk chocolate coloration, and are not a muddy brown. The only thing that would be better is if they could SMELL like a chocolate bar!!!! Hilarious! ~Jan

Catching up on the pretty late blooms. Nothing but Stella for me today blooming. I just love BARBARA MANDRELL! I saw it at Daylily World a couple of yrs back and fell in love with it. I am glad to hear that it does so well for you. Hopefully, one day I can grow that one.

I have one of the chocolate colored daylilies. It is Bluegrass Chocolate Frost, I looked but didn't find a picture of mine but here is a link to the one in the database. Odd but unique.

Friday, the 13th.....It has been raining here for days with temps in the 80's and humidity that would make your hair curl, until today, when the temps spiraled downwards 25 degrees into the 50's, and colder tonight. I still have buds on plants but this weather is so schizoid, I doubt whether the blooms will make it. Besides which, we need the colder temps to turn our Sugar Maples and Red Oaks into the beautiful Fall Foliage that Vermont is known for. Vermonters demand it. So on a cold, wet, grey and dismal day, I walked out my front door, and looked down into the garden, to see these two daylilies blooming. I hardly recognized

CUTTING LOOSE - On re-bloom with more buds tucked behind this bloom, a very drenched bloom hung its head. I shook the water off off the petals and snapped this picture.

and at the bottom of my steep garden slope, I saw another lily blooming. I took a short walk down to the lower level by the stonewall, camera in hand, and there was the FFOE on Jelly Maker which was added to the garden this past Spring.

JELLY MAKER

I still have buds on 5 or 6 plants but if we get hit by a frost this week, It will be difficult for the plants to bloom. I cannot complain, however. This has been the longest and best bloom season for me and my gardens, ever. Hurray! Thumbs up

Now, the last few days would blooming flowers. But I have once harvested the seeds of some species with which I breed. I have some distinguished according to the form so that I can gather together. It is easy to distinguish species fruits. Unfortunately H. altissima is not included in the AHS and in the DB. And unfortunately in the database for the specified synonymous citrina (Daylily (Hemerocallis citrina)). However, that is different (flowers, leaves, fruits).

Wow Ed, your Ruffled Strawberry Parfait has a whole lot more ruffles than mine does. I wonder if the plant has to mature a bit. I have only had mine for 2 summers and it is only 2 fans.

ED....I just love 'Ruffled Strawberry Parfait'. I am bidding on some seeds on the LA right now with Van Helsing cross. But I really want to add this plant to my garden. I just have to find the plant for sale at a reasonable price. Of course, I am not planting anything until next Spring. But RSP is on my very select wish list. Just love it! Your bloom is just lovely. Thumbs up
