I'm just gonna go outside today and grow!

I've got to get those Prickly Pear fruits picked too. They're very ready to be canned, and so mature now they are almost thornless. Smiling

Well, I'm envious. It's been so cold here this winter (nothing compared to some parts of the country) that even the Opuntias are down. And they are planted against a south-facing brick wall where it gets maximum sun and heat absorption/release. Sad I do hope they make it.

Herbie43, I think you should stick with the way you already tested it!

AND MAYBE do the "under the pot" test again, with pots of soil on it (sans seeds if it's too early) to verify it will do for the duration of your being away.

Interesting. It looks like they raised plenty of money to get funded on Kickstarter. I wonder how it's going.

My first thought upon looking at the first picture was "You've got to be kidding!! A sure recipe for failure." I live in New Orleans, and I know our planting seasons here are different from the midwest & north, but for me, few of these veggies grow at the same time:
tomatoes - spring & fall, can't take summer heat
carrots - fall & winter
onions - planted in fall/late winter. 6 months to grow
red pepper & jalapeno - spring & fall, can't take summer heat
eggplant - summer, needs heat

This mat would be a major disappointment for a new gardener.

What a mess!

I agree and another Yikes.

Many of us likely remember that show with "The Square foot Gardener". One healthy plant per square foot alone would be all that might work, and the multiple plants shown in this growing platform on that site would be incredbly cramped into their offered 4x6 growing space in my mind.

The in ground square foot gardening concept (from the show) is genious and works, (for above ground raised planters too. I have several on legs at waist height) and I have enjoyed the benefits of the show, tried it and still do.

One Italian Parsley alone as we know can grow mammoth. We all know how big Basils grow and Tomatoes and etcetera, etcetera, etcetera.

This product on the site reminds me of those rediculous tiny mini grow light containers that were being sold at rediculous prices in the near past few years that were supposed to grow beautiful herbs and Tomatoes on your indoor countertop. Over 100 bucks a pop! The creators made their millions and I can guarantee that 90 plus percent of them are now sitting in garages on a shelf or have long been in the landfill by now.
...and its a fact! Hilarious!

Oh, come on now. Square Foot Gardening does have it's fans and still going strong. I've done a modified version of it and it worked well. You just have to remember to fertilize.

That is exactly what I was saying. I love and believe in that show. It was and is an all time favorite of mine!

The item being sold on the site Critter shared with us (Thank you Critter, as it was an interesting diversion on a drizzly in home day!) crams too many plants into a tiny space and it looks more like a seed starter tray to me was my point.

Thumbs up

I'll edit my above message to clarify for future readers. Thank you for bringing the confusion to my attention. I tip my hat to you.

Excactly! Notice it sitting on all that beautiful wasted grassy area near the waterway in that last pic.

Rip out that grass and give those babies a chance to grow was my first thought. Had to love the picture with the cubicle for Jalapenos. Blinking Are they gonna' make peppers when their 3 inches high? Hee Haw and a double Snoooort!!! Hilarious!

I'm a bit concerned, cause I just ordered a bunch of seeds from Evergreen. I couldn't print out the receipt and inadvertently shut down the website. There is exactly ZERO contact info, except for a fax number.

After this, I went onto another, reputable website that rates vendors, and Evergreen doesn't seem to be batting a thousand lately -- not even close to .500, or .300...

The latest reviews were about how the seeds received (when they were received) didn't germinate. And lots of seeds were sown. I sure hope I didn't just get skimmed...the worse part is no contact info, and no customer service response.

Let the buyer be wary... Sad

I also thought the plants were to close together and what if you wanted to plant your own seedlings. how the heck were you supposed to plant them through the mat without ripping it apart.
