I didn't notice a thread for September; did I miss it? If so I will gladly move these photo's over.

Taken through the glass door (the glass has film so the birds couldn't see me.)

Tufted Titmouse ... the two little ones in the second photo were snatching wood chips from the planter and flying off with them?! I have no clue what they wanted the wood for LOL.

Ok, I see no one else has posted on this new September thread yet so here are a few more photo's taken this afternoon when I was out on my deck.

A pair of Mourning Doves perched in an Elm tree:
Thumb of 2013-09-12/plantladylin/320067 Thumb of 2013-09-12/plantladylin/cd5781

And, this male Red-bellied Woodpecker perched in the same Elm where he sat preening himself for a long while. Every so often he'd look at me when the camera would beep as I was taking pictures. Isn't he a handsome fella?

And, a pair of resident Muscovy Ducks that I see in the waterway quite often; the first I believe is the female and second the male:

Oh how I miss titmice, we had them in PA and as a child I dearly loved them. My mom was a big believer in feeding birds and it has stayed with me. We dont get the variety of birds here on the farm that we got on the mountains of my childhood, but we are on the migratory highway and get the occasional different kind of bird.

This young Barred Owl lost one of his parents to a car and we had to deliver him to raptor rescue when he became extremely dehydrated. They will return the birds to their original territory if the owner wishes it after they learn to hunt and survive on their own. We see owls dead on the side of the road too often, I hate it.

Most folks can't believe we have such a love for raptors when we have free range fowl but we don't lose birds to them. And I fear for the wild animals as more and more city folk move out here without understanding how to exist in the country instead of the asphalt jungle.

Joy: Love, Love, Love that photo of the young Owlet! So sad to hear that you see so many dead alongside the roads so often. Crying I live in the city but we have owls, bald eagles, ospreys and a variety of herons and even wood storks. I took this photo Wednesday afternoon; a Wood Stork that flew by and landed in a neighbors yard. They aren't the prettiest bird on the block, LOL but very interesting looking in their own way:

It's so sad to hear of birds dying for whatever reason but really makes me very Grumbling when I hear of one being shot! My heart broke this morning when our newspaper reported a story about a Bald Eagle that had been shot. It was found on 9/11 and taken to a Vet where X-rays revealed it had been hit by at least 15 Shotgun Pellets!!! It was given antibiotics and fluids being fed poultry, mice and fish; was doing well and seemed to be improving somewhat but it ended up dying. Crying I hope with all my being that the culprit (s) are apprehended and made to pay for this heinous act!! http://www.news-journalonline....

I agree, an idiot who should not be in possession of a firearm!

A couple of photo's from this afternoon.

Bunches of Mourning Doves were perched on a power line ... couldn't get them all in the frame. And when I was out working in the yard late this afternoon; I heard a hawk screeching and looked up to find watch it and had to laugh, a a Mockingbird was chasing it off!! The Mocker then came back and landed on the power line and sat there looking around. I went to the porch and grabbed my camera hoping the hawk would return (but it didn't) so I took a picture of the Doves and then snapped one of the Mockingbird as it turned to look at me:

That's a great expression on that mocker's face Lin. Isn't it amazing how the song birds can actually harass hawks to the point the hawk goes away?

What surprised me was seeing the mockingbird chasing the hawk ... as large as the hawk was it was afraid of the mockingbird that was dive bombing it. I told my dh that maybe it was a young hawk. You'd think the hawk would have turned and grabbed the mocker for a quick snack! Smiling

LOL, I see Mockingbirds chasing other birds all the time (the big Crow's especially) but I'd never seen one chasing a big hawk. It was fun to watch. Smiling

I have seen the Mockingbirds harass cats often. Dive bomb them. Not really a safe thing for them to do.

When mockers have fledglings on the ground they will dive bomb anything. I've been walking my dog & they have dive bombed her. They have also dive bombed me in my yard when they had fledglings but if you pay close attention, they don't truly get close enough, long enough to get caught. They are just trying to scare whatever it is off.

I think usually it works. I see cats run off because they can't take the harassment from the crazy birds. Hilarious!
