sunday said:I thought I posted yesterday. I hope I do it right this time. Susan, I do also like Set The Style. I should have some seedlings bloom from it, but I do wish I had used it more. Next year, I should make a point. Judy, what have you been getting with Little Big Ears ? I'll bet some fun things. Do give us a preview ! Here is another one of Curt's pleateds. Neutron Star.

I had a Fad Gadget seedling bloom for me last summer.. I can't wait to see her this summer

Hi Colleen, welcome to ATP!

Super nice seedling, love the deep pleating and the ruffled edge. Thumbs up I can see why you can't wait to see her bloom this year! You'll have to show us when she does. I've saved a few seedlings from Acquired Arcadian Bliss, one of Fad Gadgets parents. Do you have any other Sculpted forms, seedlings or registered ones you are growing?

I am interested in adding some sculpted daylilies. Any comments of your favorite ones? I have a couple in the yellow/cream color. Any purples?

Hi, Teresa. I don't think I have any purple sculpted daylilies. All of mine are sculpted relief, as I'm not nuts about sculpted cristate or sculpted pleated.

I have a couple of yellow/gold/peach type color ones, and I have Scarface, which is registered as "rosy red."Thumb of 2021-06-25/MrKGDickie/c81dc1It photographs purplish, and it usually appears more brick red to the eye. It's one of mine that differs in color from day to day, probably depending on the kind of or amount of light it gets.
Hardy hibiscus are a hobby, but daylilies are an obsession.

Relief is also my favorite type of Sculpting. But the combination of some of the Pleated and Relief do make a beautiful bloom to me.
Groove-billed Ani is the only "purple" that I have.

This is what it has looked like so far in my garden: I have only had it for about two years now, hopefully it will still improve, maybe become more purple?
Thumb of 2021-06-25/Seedfork/74b738

So far it is not showing the really deep relief I am looking for in sculpted relief plants.
I just did a search for sculpted relief plants yesterday and was surprised to see so many that were listed as being relief showed no relief in the photos. I would think if someone was registering a plant as being sculpted relief, they would want that trait to show in the registration photos.
This is a photo of DIXIE SWEETHEART in my garden, it shows the type of sculpted relief I really like, deep, obvious relief.

Here is one by Fred Manning, this is one of the best growers among my sculpted relief plants.
Thumb of 2021-06-25/Seedfork/621fd9
Can't post without showing Char's Nazca Hummingbird, I have loaded this plant with pods two years in a row and it has not slowed down. Another good grower in the garden.
Thumb of 2021-06-25/Seedfork/2064a3
CHAN DOM VONGTHIRATH: By Dan Hansen, hoping as it matures the relief will get deeper. I was not able to set a pod on it, but I did set some pods on other plants with the pollen from it. We will wait and see if the seeds grow anything. It has gotten off to a great start and is multiplying pretty well so far.

Always interesting to go back and read through these old threads. Enjoyed seeing Juli's posts, miss seeing her on here all the time. Sad
I didn't forget your tmail Teresa, just a little slow posting. I'm trying to get all the last minute things done before bloom starts. Smiling
Scarface looks really nice. So does Fred's relief form Lillian's David Phillips.
There's a lot of Sculpted forms in my garden. I've been collecting them for almost 20 years. I'm not sure which of the sub-forms, pleated, relief or cristate you are looking for so I'll add a few of each that are not yellow.
A few favorite pleated forms...

Dan Hansen and Tom Polston have some nice pleated intro's, I just haven't grown any of them here....yet.

Favorite non yellow relief forms....non yellow relief forms are hard to find! Dan Hansen has made tremendous steps in advancing them in other colors and with eyes.

A few of Dan Hansen's I'd grow if I thought they would like it here....
Seems like a good parent for eyed relief.

Dan sent No Fear as a bonus 3 years ago, a kid from Bridge of Sighs. So far it has been hardy and happy growing here.

and another BoS kid I'd like to try.

Tried growing Parting the Red Sea twice, once with a plant from Dan and again with a plant from Curt. Seems to do ok in zone 5 just not zone 4.

Pleated Perfection lived here ok., it didn't like our cold mornings and had trouble opening. It's much happier in Larry's garden Smiling

Cream base, the yellow relief stretches over the cream which can give a yellow appearance.

Light relief, the yellow with red eye makes a bright color combination. Much better grower than the non sculpted Adorable Tiger with the same colors.

A really round relief form from Lee Pickles

A few cristate forms that aren't yellow...
Sigourney

System of Edges, another one from Curt Hanson

Crimson Enigma is a red diploid from Clayton Burkey

A few lavenders

Two midrib cristates from Dave Mussar

A few of Dan Hansen's

Snarky has been hardy here. There's a group of sdlgs getting ready to bloom Crossing Fingers!

A purple, Starched Petticoats hasn't shown much cristation here yet.

Eyes and pinks

Saw a reference on Facebook to the media content on the AHS site and wasn't sure if this PowerPoint entitled "Shapes of Distinction" about sculpting had been mentioned before. All of the presentations at the link below are free to anyone. The sculpting presentation is down around #28 on the list. Great examples on here:

That's a blast from the past Vickie! It was over 10 years ago when I put that together for AHS. A year after Sculpted forms were accepted for registration I wrote an article for the journal and then did the powerpoint. There's been a lot of amazing Sculpted registrations since then. Colors, patterns, some with fancy edges, new shapes in cristation, sculpted dips...exciting stuff. Thumbs up

Hi Judy,
It's been more than 10 years now! What changes have you seen since you wrote this? What has impressed or amazed or excited you the most?

Ann

P.S. I saw Char's lovely gallery posted above in 2021 after I wrote this. I haven't read the entire thread yet. I miss Juli @daylily too. We always loved visiting her garden and/or having lunch at a fun deli in Granville. She had the first smartphone I ever saw. She started showing us daylily photos on it, flipping through images, and I said "Wait! What are you doing? What is that?"πŸ˜„

I'd welcome reflections from any other fans of these forms !! Larry @seedfork, I didn't know you are working with these. Looks like you have a supportive climate πŸ‘πŸ»!

Well, ten years seems like a long time ago but being I am "working" with sculpted forms and I am just beginning to realize 10 years may not be so long. I am expecting to have at least some progress with this bloom season, up till now it has been almost non existent. But, I am so glad I picked an elusive goal, I do keep seeing others making progress, and that is encouraging. I now have confidence that by the time I am 98 I will have at least one plant worthy of registration.

Juli @daylily Thanks for the acorn! It's nice to know you're still reading what's going on πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ€—

Larry @Seedfork Only until you're 98? πŸ˜‚ I think people tend to be too hard on judging their daylilies when they're looking to make that first registration. Watch what the "pros" do. Scarcely any of the daylilies they introduce become winners. There's a lot of competition, so they don't expect them to. They introduce the best of what they have each year. They don't wait for perfection. Improvements or "something different" are the main criteria.

Maybe if you picked 3 or 4 of your best so far to register at once it would take the pressure off trying to find just one worthy?

Spoken by a person who has never registered a daylily πŸ˜„ and only just this year decided to try making and actually planting some crosses with beauty in mind (instead of science).

There is no pressure for me to register a daylily. If I never have a registered daylily that is fine with me, but I would love to have some actually worthy of being registered and be something that I worked to create, not just something that turned out really nice but was not what I was working toward.

I've looked into this thread several times now and this year I've ordered some sculpted relief forms (two pleated and two cristate I already have) to get a better picture of the whole issue.
Can anybody here tell me if these traits will be passed to seedlings quite often or quite seldom? This year I would like to give some crosses a try - to broaden my late and very late program (pollen freezing works good for me here).

I have found that the sculpted relief is seldom passed down with the crosses I have done. I have not tried the cristate and pleated forms, but I understand that they are more easily passed down. I will certainly be interested in your efforts. Which sculpted relief daylilies did you order, I just got three more off the Lily Auction and got them planted yesterday.

Thank you for your feedback!
Relief of Mars and Spacecoast Pattern Plus arrived last week, at the moment I try to get Wanda Rutkiewicz. A few years ago I got Crow's Feet from a friend but I did not use it up to now for crossing - I would prefer not to use yellow parent plants because there are already so many late and very late yellow cultivars available.
