I just sent Creator's Song south, didn't do well for me, did bloom pretty, but just didn't seem to like our long cool springs. Trying to grow but struggles, and I decided it needed a warmer spring...

It blooms up here pretty well, but I suspect the "spines" would be more pronounced some where warm.Thumb of 2013-06-26/julrich/4ce7b6

Well I did end up sending some of Spiney Sea Urchin south. Still have a fan though.

I have a daylily that I love/hate. I bought it when Holly Hills daylily farm was going out of business. It was supposed to be Clairvoyant Lady but I suspect I got Freckled Lass (or something else) instead. I'm not complaining because it was miserably hot that day and I had the poor guys digging up almost 50 daylilies. Anyway, here is the one I can't decide whether to keep or pitch.Thumb of 2013-06-26/bxncbx/165e97
I can't really complain about the habit. I have it planted in my front yard (which is tiny) and the large blooms are showstopping even if they are barely above the foliage. I just don't like the colors. But every time it blooms it is just so striking where it is that I just can't bring myself to get rid of it. I should also get rid of Mt. Pinatubo Sunset since it barely gives me any flowers but when it blooms it is just so pretty I fall for it all over again. Smiling

The weather does lot of culling for me, however, I am really helping it along this year. Im tired of taking care of so-so stuff. Im keeping the plants I love and great habits, everything else is gone. While I can swing it, I would rather have a nice batch of seedlings every year, fun to see what opens. I learned this year to cull the heck out of them too.

I'm getting more picky about daylilies I guess. I used to have Matt and although it had a pretty flower, I couldn't stand the fact that it bloomed in the foilage so I gave it away. I also prefer taller daylilies. I try not to buy anything under 26".

Welcome! bxncbx, have several I feel like that about, and they are almost all related to color, but I am going to try being strong and sending them on to new homes where they will be appreciated for all of their qualities. Big Grin

Hiya BXN! Welcome!

I am going to TRY to be strong (er) this year. We will see how well I do. I just kinda hate getting rid of daylilies I paid good money for. And Mother Nature herself is doing a number on other ones. I have kept Tusk alive for several years now, am tired of nursing it, and it died a natural death. Never did bloom Grrrr - but I had already determined to pull it if it didn't bloom, I could use the garden spot with something that DOES survive.. I have some two year old seedlings which I am going to try cull ruthlessly this year - I know I have a couple of keepers in that batch though. But I have new seedlings that need homes.

Ask me at the end of the season how well I did!!! ~Jan

One of the few that I've been disappointed with is Jolyene Nichole. I think the bloom is gorgeous, but the scapes are almost never more than 6 inches tall! I had 7 clumps of them in my front yard, and they were all way too short. I moved a clump to the backyard to see if that would help. It didn't. I think it was even shorter! I moved the one clump from the backyard with me, and I'm hoping that it does better here. Out of all the daylilies that I brought with me, I expected none of them to have scapes this year, but Jolyene Nichole was the first! I guess it was letting me know that I will be glad that I didn't leave it behind, and the scapes are a tiny bit taller than they were before. Good news, because it's a beauty, and I can't bring myself to part with it - yet!

Francois Verhaert is one that has been disappointing to me. I had 7 blooms on it yesterday and none opened fully. In the years I've had it, I have seen a few nice flowers, but lots moe bad ones than good ones. I also am not very fond of the peach/purple combination of colors on it. I think it is one I will be looking for a new home for soon.

Just remembered Ninja Knight. Had high hopes for it, but first blooming this year and the flowers never open more than halfway. The location gets more sunlight than any other in the yard, so it isn't that. It might have to go ninja somewhere else...

Once a number of years ago the winter killed off a bunch in one area of my garden for some unknown reason. Looking at it today you would never know as the area is full. Sometimes I remove one or two that are older and give them to friends or relatives making room for a new to me daylily.
If you want to be happy for a lifetime plant a garden!

I agree It rarely fully opens here and it blooms low too, down in the foliage a lot Thumbs down I moved mine to my front yard at the bottom of the hill.

I will getting rid of a few this year. One may be The Band Played On. I always loved it in photos but it just blooms ugly for me.
