I have probably 15-20, but all are just now in their second years so I have no idea yet what the blooms will look like. Patience, gotta have patience. Big Grin

Hi Becky

I know you received seeds from me and I continue to hybridize. This past summer I pollinated over 800 times according to my log! I have my seedling bed which doesn't hold very many, several should be culled, but there are some I will transplant/line out and evaluate. Have fun pollinating....it makes growing daylilies so much more fun! Here's a sampling of my seedlings....

My family and I own about four acres in western PA along the Allegheny River. A section of that property used to be a daylily farm waaaay back in the 60's and before. Every year I bring a few daylilies back with me and transplant them to WI. Granted, some are probably hybrids that have been fertilized by insects over the years, but some of them used to be named hybrids - but I haven't a clue what they truly are.

No matter, they are pretty anyways.

I also have some seedlings that I am enjoying. Yes, I will register one, but the rest? probably not.

It is great fun though!

Mike - Thanks! I listened to this week's podcast "Daylilies Week with Melanie Mason" and was surprised to hear that she grows her seeds the same way I do. She gave a lot of good advice, IMHO! Good luck with your mass indoor seed planting this winter!

Vickie - Thank you! I love your NOIDS!!! Your "thriller" daylily is beautiful! Did you hand-pollinate yours or were they volunteers?

Liz - Lovely NOIDS!!!! I really like the 5th and last daylilies pictured!

Natalie - Thank you! I, too, only hybridize for myself to add more daylilies to my garden beds. I don't know anything about registering daylily plants. I had thought you had to know the parentage to do that? Thanks for clarifying otherwise. I really like your idea to name some in honor or memory of a family member. Awesome suggestion! I am so sorry you had to leave your seedlings behind when you moved. I hope you have a beautiful garden at your new place!

Debra - I hope you will post photos when they do bloom! I'd love to see them, too!

Hi Sandy!!! YES! I did get some of my seeds from you! And all that germinated, grew, and bloomed were beautiful and still are! Thank you again for your generosity! I love them! I had 2 other daylilies gardeners who shared with me as well, but I gave up trying to mark and keep track of all of them. I have had fun cross-pollinated many of them and have had a couple of years where I created my own crosses that have since bloomed. "Sunrise over Sebastian" is one of those. How long from seed does it take for yours to bloom up there in WI? Your hybrid photos are stunning!!!

Jan - Very lovely yellow dip hybrid! How lucky to be able to "find" daylilies on your PA property from a previous operated daylily nursery/farm!

One thing that I discovered, that I didn't know about is that some cultivars/species/hybrids don't do well here in the south. I just assumed that ALL daylilies did well here, but that is not true. A lot of interesting info is posted here on this forum!

My avatar photo is of another of my more recent hybrids. It was one of those pleasant surprises!

I am pretty sure the ones that aren't doing well for you in the south are probably dormants, where they want/ need the cold weather. There are evergreens that can't handle the north either. I will let our southern friends answer this question better. ~Jan

Hi
I like to hybridize my own.
I had a big garden back in the mid 90's with a few daylilies, one day I decided to see if I could get any seeds from making my own crosses, besides the bee pods that popped up here and there.
I planted the seeds and waited 3 years to see what I would get, well it was hook a line and sinker addition.
Today I have a big daylily garden, with maybe a thousand non registered seedlings that are so good that I can sell the seeds on the lily auction, and nobody bats a eye that they are not registered.
Until I retire in a few years I don't plan on registering any of them either.
I'm having fun, I can sell seeds that nobody else on the planet can make, and I have made a whole bunch of friendships that I wouldn't trade for anything.
I have a flicker account with lots of pictures of my seedlings, take a look if you wish

Jan - I have read that some daylilies are more winter tolerant and others are more heat tolerant. I don't know what the real difference is. I just know that some daylilies were specifically created for northern gardens and others for southern gardens. Probably east and west gardens as well.

Wow, Ed! You have some really gorgeous daylilies crosses.

I noticed that you label yours by letters and numbers. You seem to have the parentage for most of your crosses. Did you acquire the original registered plants or purchase hybrid seeds to grow your stock plants from which you have been creating your own hybrids? Purchasing the actual fans is way out of my price range. I grow my garden on a limited budget.

I had never seen the Lily Auction until recently and I was blown away! Amazing what some of those seeds go for! Looks like your hobby could pay for itself!

Just curious .... how big is your daylily garden? A thousand daylilies is a LOT!!!

Sandy, my goodness, what beautiful seedling! And like Debra, I absolutely love the second one, but as I look them over again, I love them all!

Jan, Cottage 12-1 is very nice looking. How wonderful that you can go to those four acres and transplant to WI. It must be nice to have your own free daylily farm to go to every year and see if there is something new blooming! I would love that Smiling

Becky, any daylily in my garden now was given to me by a friend or neighbor. Until this year, I picked almost every spent bloom and seed pod off. However, I had to miss some and a daylily bloomed in 2012 and this year that had to be a bee pollinated seed from "Outrageous", because I certainly wouldn't have put it where it is now, and "Outrageous was there only daylily close by until I added Autumn Wood in 2010 and Lavender Blue Baby in 2011.

This is what this space looked like in 2012 right in front of the plow. The daylily with the dark eye is hiding behind an "Autumn Wood" bloom.

This is what this space looked like this year in front of the plow. Now I don't know enough about hybridizing to know if this bloom could have even come from the same seed pod, but it is in almost the exact same place as the bloom from 2012. Next year I will pay more attention since I have these pictures to compare. These two blooms may not be in exactly the same spot and I will have two more NOID's to add to my list!

I think I should start naming my NOID's. It's too confusing when you have several pinks with dark eyes!

Becky...how much room do you have to grow seedlings? You mentioned not being able to purchase daylilies because of limited budget, which I can totally understand! Are you going to be able to keep pollinating and growing your own seedlings? I went over to your YouTube video, really neat slideshow...and some of those seedlings are really nice! Here's one of my favorite seedlings, it bloomed for almost six weeks here in Wisconsin which is a pretty extended bloom season, at least for me! Don't know the parentage, but it is a tetraploid.

Sorry that this is going to be a short reply, as I'm listing seeds now, LOL
The thousand seedlings includes the 1-2-3 year ones yet to bloom.
My seedlings get planted about 4 inches apart, I keep the best and give away the rest.
I have a neighborhood of new daylily growers ;~)
I do buy many of the registered plants I grow, some came by the way of trades for my seedlings, some were sent to me because they thought that the plant would work with what I'm doing, Some came from trading seeds for registered or their seedlings, Like I said I made so many friendships, and each year I make more.

The hobby does make enough to let me buy a new one here and there if I want.
It takes a lot of time to make seeds to sell, so per hour average, eek!

I developed a number/letter system that I ID each plant with for hybridizing purposes.
I keep a Stud book, and computer picture files with all cross information.
Works very good for me

Becky, you can get fans of registered daylilies for very little money! They aren't all expensive! If they were, I wouldn't be buying them. I'm cheap. Super cheap. So, you just need to watch for sales. Most of mine are older, but I've picked up a few newer ones this year for very little money. I won't feel bad if they die, because I didn't spend much! People here post when someone is having a good sale!

Vickie - I love your 2 NOID daylilies! Nature's perfection at it's best! I would say they are indeed offspring from your Outrageous original plant.

I am fond of all my daylilies because they were all grown by me from seeds. Not one was a purchased plant! But I would feel honored like you to receive plants as a gift from family and friends. I am very sentimental, too! I am very grateful to Sandy and a couple others who shared their seeds with me several years ago and got me started with daylilies!

Sandy - Oooooh! Love that NOID hybrid! Gorgeous! Even better that it bloomed like crazy for you for 6 weeks! That is outstanding! Do you still do a lot of crosses? How many daylilies do you grow currently?

I have plenty of yard to add more hybrid daylilies. I am hoping to get some new hybrid seeds soon from another generous gardener here on ATP to add some new gene characteristics to my creations. I would like to play around with some new genes of dark eyes, ruffles, and teeth varieties. I really like those with the wide eyes, too. And looking at the hybrids on LA, I am in awe. Sheesh! How the heck did they create some of those blooms????!!! Astonishing!

I've been growing my own crosses for about 3 years now. I have roughly about 150 daylilies. Some have done very well here in my zone and climate, others have not. The ones that don't ... typically die off after the 2nd year. The dayliles that do survive ... grow and thrive and bloom their heads off for me. It's all trial and error to see which ones prefer a home here in Florida. So .... even if I currently have about 150 plants, some will succumb and my numbers drop down. This year due to unforeseen circumstances, I wasn't able to hand-pollinate very many crosses. So I maybe have 20-30 seeds to germinate this Winter from my own creations. But I hope to have some to grow from another daylily gardener soon, too! I will then use all those to do some more creations over the next 2 years as those germinate, grow, and bloom!

I enjoy the hybrid creation part very much! It's like a Christmas present that you are waiting to open! The anticipation is such fun! I only grow them for myself. Most of my friends and family members aren't into gardening at all. I am the odd-ball in my circle of peeps, I guess. LOL! But I've been told I make up for everyone else with my determination and enthusiasm. Everyone is always surprised when they come to my house and see my garden areas. I have a lot of butterflies and the hummers that are always a thrill for people who have never seen one before. So I tried to garden organically. My yard stands out like as sore thumb in my neighborhood of well manicured expansive lawns and green shrubs/trees. I have "color" in my yard. LOL!

Ed - Thanks for taking the time out of your busy schedule to answer my questions! I like the method to your madness! I wished my neighbors and family members liked flower gardening. I'd surely love to see some of my daylilies in their yards! That's wonderful that other sellers and buyers have shared with you to give you more crossed variety of hybrids!

Natalie - Thanks for your kind suggestion!

I have priced the daylily fans all around and it is still very high for the cultivars or bloom characteristics that I would like to have. Seeds on the other hand are my best option. I am very fortunate to have success growing daylilies from seeds. It allows me plants that I otherwise would never be able to afford. When I say I am on a limited budget, I mean VERY LIMITED!!!

I know many gardeners don't have the patience to grow plants from seed. It does require more time and work, but if that is the only way I can acquire some that I desire, then I am more than happy to take that journey! I really don't care whether a plant has a registered name or not. (Though the idea of naming and registering some of my crosses in honor or memory of loved ones is very appealing to me ... for sentimental purposes.) I grow what I find personally attractive. My taste is probably not the same taste as other gardeners. I create garden "rooms" in my yard. And they are forever changing each year. The joy is in the journey ....

For anyone interested in my current daylily garden room, you can take a peek in my blog (read the comments I have added recently). I did that to have a reference point of my gardening journey from year to year because it does seem to change in some dramatic ways each year as I add to my yard.

Hi Becky....Last year (2012) was an awful year for hybridizing, I hardly did any at all due to very hot temps last summer. This year was a great year and I did over 800 crosses this year and got pretty good seed production. I have seeds to share if you're interested, send me a tree mail!

Here's an Etched Eyes seedling that bloomed for me this year. I included a distance shot so you can see how big this bloom is. I think I measured it at over 7". -Sandy

Becky, I'm one of the oddballs that don't want to plant seeds unless I'm the one that hybridized them myself. I know it's a great way to get the genetics that you want, and I may buy some in the future, but since I have no plans on ever becoming a big-time hybridizer, I prefer to create my own masterpiece, or dud. More than likely, it would be a dud! But, it's so much fun!
