Joanna, I had planned to write this up as an article but procrastinated too long. To do it justice my write up would be too long and complex for Ideas. I took many photos from beginning to end for my article. Some day I will get around to writing it up and find a place to publish it.

A professional garden photographer took photos last April when the Sempervivum Clinic group toured my garden. Well, they came just to see my table garden but I had another goodie or two for them to enjoy.

A miniature table garden constructed on one large flat rock. I guess I could write this up as an idea; much less involved than the big one.

Write this one up, please! And you could even provide a link to this thread so that people can come to see your larger table project too! Yes, yes! Please do! Hurray!

OK, it will be a while though. I'll try to get it done before the end of the year, that gives me plenty of time. I'm pretty busy with a lot of things right now. A post-it reminder will go on my monitor edge.

So glad you pointed me here. Nice to read the entire, 4 year evolution of your table garden in one go. What a great idea. I thought it was going to be a garden on a table not a table that was a garden! Just beautiful. Loved the addition of burlap skirts on the hardware. Really liked the rock table. Really really like the idea of not kneeling down to get a good look or garden. What is the base made of? Just have one more thing to add to the chorus of suggestion......this would make a very interesting article but I don't think NGA does those anymore? This thread was great. I tip my hat to you.

The base consists of four 2" thick by 10" wide by eight feet long Douglas fir boards. The boards rest on a total of nine saw horses.

I originally planned to do an article but yes, new articles by members are not accepted. They now have Garden Ideas but I see that as for shorter less involved ideas. I did a lot of photo documenting as I constructed it.

I was wrong about more yellow iris photos in this thread. They are on my computer and here they are:

Thumb of 2017-12-06/pardalinum/ba1030

I planted them in a couple of places on the table.

How sweet that little yellow iris is Connie.

Leslieray, you should come up at clinic time and see this table in person.

@pardalinum
Not so! The fact that no one has yet posted a longer, more involved article doesn't mean they don't belong there.

Hope you'll do it. It's the perfect place for your article and I'm sure it would be greatly appreciated by a lot of members. Crossing Fingers! Crossing Fingers! Crossing Fingers!

Not that it makes a lot of difference to me, but when you are writing an article in the forum format, you have to do it all in one sitting. This means all of the rough draft, the editing, the formatting of photos into it. There is no saving to drafts and coming back later. That is one major reason for not doing long articles here.

When we had the article format, we could save to a draft and work at our own pace. And previously when I wrote articles, I could upload all of my photos to the bottom of my article, then move them up to their intended location when ready. Just sayin'... Shrug!

Sort of but not 100% correct.... It's easy enough to use a word processor to do your initial drafts (Word or similar) and then copy / paste the text to the forum post and upload the images to the proper places. It's not saving drafts online at this site, but it's still saving your drafts and continuing later, working at your own pace. Once you do post, you can go back and edit at any time you wish, so definitely, no problem there. In fact, we recently saw one person do this with a great idea on elevated beds. It's shorter than longer, and totally awesome. He even included his plans. Very well done.

I really do hope you'll post your writeup there. It'll be fantastic!

I agree

I have enjoyed reading through this thread and seeing how your table has developed. I love the idea and might use it to cover some unsightly wooden boxes (used to hide various utilities) in my yard. Thank You!

A tip for writing longer posts in the forums: You can copy the text you write incl. the picture links from the forum text box (not the preview!) and paste it into an ordinary text document, such as MS Word. This way you can write as much as you like when you like and add pictures (which is usually the time-consuming bit). All you have to do before publishing is copy the whole text from your text document into the forum text box. I always do this for longer, picture-heavy posts to make sure it does not accidentially disappear juuust before I'm ready to press 'Finished'. D'Oh!

(Disclaimer: There might be a limit to how much data can be posted at once (Dave will know of course) but it should be easy to carve up your finished text into smaller bits if necessary.)
Of course I talk to myself; sometimes I need expert advice!

Great ideas Joanna and Lilli.
Connie you could redo your first post that way, and it would be a great tutorial.

I don't think there is a limit. I have seen some pretty long post. If it does limit out you could edit your second post in this thread. Hurray!
