Thank You!

For keeping my post alive folks...

I lost most of my plants this winter, it was a bad one!

I'm quite eager to rebuild, now, I was a little sore about it all, hence my absence...

So if any of you are interested in trades, I'll have some nice lil pups available soon/now/whenever, and I could prolly let a few seeds go to sweeten the deal, their good ones!

Needs me some more haws!

I'll get us fresh pics soon!
Please tree mail me for trades, I'm ALWAYS actively looking for more new plants, and love to trade!

That red is intense!

My reinwardii won't get that red, but it looks a bit dif...

There's sure no keeping em from floppin!

H. Reinwardii and H. Coarctata and supposed to the ONLY 2 haws that will tolerate FULL sun, tho it sure seems like most will take a lot more than they like!

Where have you been gathering your haws from?
Do you currently live in CA? I seem to remember you either lived elsewhere or currently live elsewhere...

I snagged 2 of the H emelyea off the cheesy Altman plants cart (death row) at lowes, they were mismarked, at 5 am I can't remember what ID was on them but it was wrong!

Some of my haws were given to me by my aunt in 2009..and the others from a trade here in ATP, or bought at our local HD.
Yeah that reindwardtii, one of them is still keeping its reddish color and the other one has already returned to its usual green. It has made its babies which have remained green. Big Grin Yup, I live in CA.

Taking plant pics today. Here's a Haw that's not with the rest of them. I think he looks really happy, yes?

It's gorgeous but to be honest, I'd say it wants more sun and less water...

The leaves look over plump and that twisty look is abnormal for most of the "fairy washboard" type haws, almost all of them should have scooped out looking leaves and still erect upright leaves...

The thing is...the haxangulares(sp.) group of haws is pretty big, but more than that they are EXTREMELY varied, there's species that have upwards of 20 subspecies that may all lie in a 5 sq mike area, yet each colony is disticly dif from the next...

So I could be wrong, I don't like the look of that soil either...I'm feelin picky tonight I guess

I have obe has that's lookin just like that but it's less twisted and more splayed open, flaring open even, looks great but I know it's wrong...

I've also learned how to tell H attenuata from H. Fasciata!

Apparently fasciata will have white bumps (tubercles) on both the top and bottom surfaces of the leaves, attenuata will be smooth on the top or inside of each leaf...

Hardly seems a distinction worth dividing the 2 otherwise identical plants into 2 species...
What do I know tho

Thanks Planto, Bev, Tarev! Thanks for sharing your concerns, Sway! This plant has more than doubled in size in less than a year, by making pups, but I don't know a 'normal' looking Haw from an abnormal one. The sun hits it from about noon until 6-7 PM, but the Haw is kind of under the other plants, and it's been cloudy many days lately (a welcome relief from the heat!) When the other plants elongate, they should lean sideways more and let more light shine on the Haw. I keep taking cuttings of the T. pallida to put other places.

Here's a pic of the whole pot, everything in it is growing really fast, put together in October I think, in palm/citrus soil if memory serves, though the trees drop a lot of debris on these pots so there are all kind of bits in there that I pick out occasionally. This hot moist weather does cause soils to degrade quickly, everything in here should be able to handle being repotted soon. Except for the Haw, most of the other stuff was little cuttings when I put the pot together. You can barely see the Haw from this angle (it's at the top.) I'll go out later and 'lean' the other plants off of the Haw more.

That's a potful for sure!

After seeing the whole pot I'm sure it'll be fine!

All those guys in there prolly drink it pretty dry pretty fast...

I've actually struggled with haws in the past, still do to some extent... I often over sun them, your observation, purp, "kind of under the other plants" I right where haws wanna be!
Hiding under scrubby brush, in a hot bright dry spot.
The trouble I have most often is root "die off" I don't call it rot cuz they usually aren't rotted, although that has happened too!
The best I can tell from my own observations is: heavy, dense, rich soil will grow most haws, for a while, but inevitably, their growth slows, I've learned to tug on em when I'm worried, often it's summer dormancy related, but a gently tug will reveal the plants barely anchored to the soil, fully exhuming it reveals all tge roots are dryied and dead, but still intact, often a new, bright white root or 3 will be shooting out of the basal plate...
Root die off...
In that loose fluffy looking mix, like you have there, with lots of peat and bark, I find a different means to the same end, a sharp tug will reveal...all roots are rotted and near fully degraded...gone!
That's the root rot, usually from damp conditions...I guess...

It never seems to damage the plant, just slows it down, it never really established or pups like it should...

I also think that some haws grow annual roots, meaning that many healthy roots will simply perish, the plant "lets them go" tgen regenerates new roots yearly, many woody lilies do this, heck plain ole stargazers do it, so it may not be a big deal at all

I dunno... Sticking tongue out

Fun stuff tho

Me too, Bev. :+) Like it's on the verge of being out of control - or maybe it already is!

Sway, glad I'm not the only one who can think a thing to a submission of minutiae - LOL!

The next best thing to living in a jungle is trying to create mini ones in pots, a diff kind of mini garden - not mini plants but a small collection of 'normal' plants. Incidents of disappointment are way down since I started making mini ecosystems instead of leaving plants individually potted. The plants seem to like it, and even if one is struggling, the pots still look great overall. I also think the sheer number of roots in the pot help keep things from staying too moist after a rain.

I'll give this guy a tug occasionally, good idea. I think the Kalanchoe would pout quickly if things get bad (too decomposed and staying moist too long) in this pot. IDK how long these plants will remain companions, but something about the different greens and purple really turns me on.

Yea purp, plants of all sorts seem to thoroughly enjoy companions!

It's just a matter of grouping them right if you intend for the planting to last long and be maintenance free...if there's such a thing.

Once you get a knack for plantin up garden dishes, it's good stuff! It saves room and looks great if done right, I've made em for years for myself and to sell, they always look better with time. They look more natural.

Your grouping is not dreadfully mismatched Tiffany, they can coexist!
It really goes to show that Beauty is in the eye if the beholder, I actually think that most of your experiments and grouping look fine too, I hope you don't take the above as me picking on you, I'm not!
All your stuff just screams home gardener!
I don't know of a better compliment than that to give!

My friend is into those. He ordered a H. truncata Fa Crassa. Myself, can't get into a plant that looks like the top was cut off. But stranger things have been know to happen to me. Never thought I would be into Huernias and now Gasteraloes or hybrid Aloes. As if I don't already have way too many plants.
Any houses for sale cheap down Florida with a lot of land?
