Brugmansia sanguinea, the red Brug, is a true Brugmansia. It is not a Datura. It just belongs to a different species than most of the hybrids we normally grow. Most of the Brugs we grow are B. aurea, B. insignis, B. suaveolens, B. versicolor or hybrids of the 4. These species came from warmer regions and/or lower altitudes of Central and South America. These Brug will grow and tolerate the warm summers most of the USA gets. The other species, B. arborea, B. vulcanicola and B. sanguinea came from the higher altitudes of Central and South America. Of these 3, B. arborea can handle a bit more warmth than the other 2. B. sanguinea and B. vulcanicola can not handle much heat. I'm not sure about B. vulcanicola because I couldn't find too much information on it, but B. sanguinea will not set buds nor bloom in temperatures over 72ºF. Heat over 80 - 85ºF can kill a sanguinea literally overnight. Hybrid of vulcanicola and sanguinea suffer the same fate a s sanguinea unfortunately. Now if you happen to have an air conditioned greenhouse or high humidity in your air conditioned home, you might be able to grow these two. However, stress will make them susceptible to the same viruses an their cousin, the tomato
