Jan, I wonder if I would qualify as a native? I was born here, but spent only about two weeks way down in Ft. Lauderdale. DH and I are now part timers after my brother passed away and left us his home. Florida gardening is different from AR where we have our other home and Illinois where we lived for many years.

I'd say you're a native Jean ~~~ you were born here. I consider myself a native since I celebrated my 3rd birthday here & certainly don't remember anything before 3 yrs. old.

Good morning Fla. Hope all is well with Yall!!!

My family is planing on visiting Disney in March for 5 days and was looking for any recommendations of things to do besides the magic kingdom. 2 of my granddaughters are dancing at Disney on Monday and we don't leave Disney until Thur. I'm getting to visit the HGTV Flower & Garden show and we're scheduled to do a behind the scenes tour also. I'm thinking of canceling the behind the scenes tour as I've heard the tour guide doesn't even know the names of some plants. Any assistance is appreciated!!!

I'd recommend you visit Epcot as they have great displays and wonderful gardens there. It's not quite so exciting for the kids, but might be a welcome change after all the over-stimulation of the other theme parks.

It really depends who you get as a tour guide, I'd imagine there must be more than one at the HGTV show, surely?

A little drive, maybe 45 min. east from Orlando (and not a garden) there is also the Kennedy Space Center. Kids love that.

In the other direction, north maybe a half hour drive is the Bok Tower gardens in Lk. Wales. http://boktowergardens.org/

Of course if you're at all interested in orchids, there are many commercial orchid growers in the Apopka area, just northwest of Orlando. A few but not all sell direct to the public, and you can get some fantastic deals. That's always a stop or two when I go up thataways.

Jeri, there is this too. Both links for the same place. Cypress Gardens was a classic for years & years & years but couldn't make it on it's own & in 2009 was taken over by LegoLand. However, they left the gardens intact. I have not been there since the "restructure" but according to the info., it's just as beautiful as ever. Both links are for it:

Thanks Elaine & David. I had heard about Legoland and didn't realize it's the old Cypress Gardens. That does sound interesting. I'm pretty sure we'll be doing some beach time also. The kids want to visit The Holy Lands. They learned about it in children's church and they want to do that.
