That's a shame Jan but at least there is some light for BK! KEEP ON HOPIN' did that to me for 2 years dying back to virtually nothing and then being a single tiny fan before finally finding its feet and now doing well.

The more I think back on things the more I think it was the long cold spring rather than the winter cold that did my plants in. I brought a few pots into the house in late February and put them under lights and those plants took off like weeds because they were essentially warmed overnight. No rotting problems or anything. The ones both in pots and in the ground that suffered through the repeated freezing and thawing with rain (or my stupid watering) thrown in bore the brunt of things.

DINNER TALK is holding on, though with a wicked case of spring sickness. The fans look like the plants were treated with colchicine - I keep having to cut the tops to make sure the growth has somewhere to go.

I thought I had lost Veined Velociraptor to rot in the pot. I was over joyed yesterday to find it is trying to send up a fan from what was left of the crown Hurray! It seems a good thing I was being too lazy to dump the pot *Blush*
It's my cats world, I'm just here to open the cans.

I agree that it is most likely a long, dark cold spring that is more damaging than the frigid winter.

And now alllllll this rain and temps in the 40's later this week won't help either. But at least the rain was warm, and we had some sun, so that helped.

Kudos to anyone in these northern climes that can keep daylilies alive in pots over the winter. The one year I tried it, I lost them all.

And oh yeah, I think I lost Pandoras Treasure. For the second time. Guess it's one that doesn't like living in south central Wisconsin.

Hello, it has been a while for me. I didn't lose any of my established plants, thankfully. I planted last Fall and am sad to say that TUSK didn't return. I will not

buy it again. I see others have lost it too :(

I lost Tusk last year, it never was a healthy plant, never had more than a single fan, and never bloomed. I won't ever repurchase that one.

We might get frost tonight. I think I will take some canning jars, pop them over the top of a few of them and baby some of my struggling ones, like Bullfrog Kisses.

And my blueberry bush is getting ready to bloom, I might lose the entire crop. Only got 5 berries last year after a late frost.

We're in the same boat Jan. I've got a few I might move into the porch because they have scapes (all new additions) to try and save. This weather is infuriating.

This winter has been one of the longest and worst that I can remember! Sorry to hear that you might get a frost. The high for today is only around 60 today. I am letting ti warm up before weeding this morning lol.

I am surprised that you lost Linda Beck Teresa. She made it through one of our worst winters in a long time.

Hi Teresa, good to see you. My Wispy Rays came through ok. Just planted Tusk last week. I do not like what I am hearing about Tusk and it's high mortality rate. Time will tell. I bought one fan and got four from Mljomo.
Jan you are catching %#% up there in WI. Angry

Mike, you may have to mulch Tusk heavily. I wish I would have put more mulch on Happy Happy and Bella Isabella.

I think I am going to be doing more research on some of the plants I buy in the future. I am cutting back anyway because of lack of time to care for

so many. I just love a robust plant that just strive to survive. Wimpy, here needs to go. I got into daylilies because of their supposed toughness.

I am only selling some oldies locally. I had rather someone enjoy them and care for them than see them neglected. The newer intros I am keeping for sure Smiling

Daylilies ARE tough and hardy, just some aren't in certain locations. Heck, I also lost other tough and hardy perennials. And the thing about daylilies is that sometimes they just aren't happy for whatever reason. I have given away some that did amazing in someone elses yard!

I will be the first to admit that I like to press the zones just to see if a daylily can and will survive. Tusk was always a gamble for me. Part of the problem may have been that single fan I got, in the years I had it, it never became more than that, nor grew well, no matter what I did for it. And yes, the other problem is my location.

For good news, Lillian's Banging Mangoes survived!!! It is looking a bit rough but I now have proof of life, so I am happy.

And, we never did get frost, although we got down to 34 for several nights. Plus, we didn't get any snow like I heard Chicago got. I will say this, the dandelions sure do like this weather though! ~Jan

Jan you are not lying about the dandelions. I am fully aware that Tusk is a evergreen. One of many that lives here. I planted Voila Francois in November a couple years ago. The seller wanted to send it in the spring and I told him to just send it now. Last check it is doing great. Fans have increased. I am expecting a good show this season. Tusk is right by the driveway, I got four fans instead of the one I purchased from Mljomo who incidentally is the seller that I got VF from. Time will tell!!

This is the first time since I started growing daylilies that I have lost so many over the winter. Sad

Egyptian Queen
Touched by Magic
Aztec Headdress
Fancy Face
Moonlit Masquerade
Sunset Loa

Also lost several seedlings.

I have a few more that are struggling to survive.

I was planning on buying Egyptian Queen this year but if it isn't very hardy maybe I should just be content with my "Cleopatra" instead. Shrug!
