I did not add them all up, but I would have to say I lost around 30 that I can see so far. It is to early to tell how the Hosta and Ferns did. Still hoping that some of the Hellebore pop up, But with The Heuchera and Heucherella the crowns are rotted and I have never seen them come back from that.

Sorry you lost so many Bob. I think a few of mine are goners too. Some of the others look rough. I don't remember having to cut much back before, but that what they look like they need. Should I cut the old stems back on this Lime Marmalade to where the green leaves are starting to grow?

Do the little stems here need to be trimmed?

They seem to be cut back far enough to me , but if the other stems do not come back it is most likely time to divide them.

Some of mine look similar to your photos, Susan. They seem to be my larger heuchs, so I was thinking that I would divide them. I have not done this yet, but plan on dividing soon.

I did look out in my garden beds and it seems that I have lost more heucherellas than anything else, although some of the hardier heucs seem to be gone as well. I will know more in the next couple of weeks. What surprises me though is all the heuchs I had in pots seemed to have faired well. I have never had good luck with plants overwintered in pots unless I have heeled them in for the winter. The only thing I can figure is these pots are closer to the house and are in an area that would be relatively sheltered from the winds.

The thought that goes through my mind is that plants are rated for certain zones and I am wondering what zone our winter was comparable to - I know it wasn't a typical zone 5b winter.

Looks great Clint. Some of mine are starting to shape up. Think I only lost about 3. Here's Venus just starting to send up a flowering stem.

That looks great Julia, around here things are just starting to perk up.

Looks very nice Clint , but I have tried that one twice and it does not overwinter here.

That's strange. This was just a plug last year when I planted it. Our winter was colder than normal, but I bet not half as bad as your winter.

I mentioned that I think the three heucheras that I purchase two years ago made it through the winter in the h. mircrantha thread. I thought I'd share a few photos taken a week ago. All of the plants are showing more intense coloring now that the weather is a bit warmer.

I lost my Silver Scrolls - your's is beautiful. Amethyst Mist made it through our winter very nicely though. Right now, I am watching Ginger Ale. I am thinking it could go either way.

Yes, it was a brutal winter. I have been trying to figure out what zone our weather was comparable to - I know we had a lot of days/nights that were sub zero. Typically we get 1 or 2 days that are about -1.

My day temps never go below freezing. Sometimes, the night temps will reach the single digits, but most of the time they are in the low 20s to low teens. What made this year unusual for me is that we had about a foot of snow the Friday before Thanksgiving which did not melt until January. Usually, at my elevation, snow melts within a couple of days.

There was no rain or snow in all of December and January. I actually had to pull the hoses out from under the house and water because even tho' I had snow cover, the soil under the soil was completely dry.

I never, ever, imagined myself wearing snow boots and multiple layers of clothing and going out to water. Shrug!

That is pretty much me in a nutshell. Unfortunately, every year, I get my bubble popped living in the North East.

Several of mine are finally growing nicely now that it has warmed (though we're heading into a stretch of cool, wet weather with low temps in the mid-upper 30's). I've found heucherellas to be the best performers once they are in a happy, tree root free area. Some of my heuchera are still slowly waking up (Berry Smoothie, Sugar Plum, Obsidian) but others are filling out nicely. The heucherella have bloom scapes up and ready to bloom. The white stuff in some of the photos are plum tree petals.

I love the plum petals ... Smiling

Here's a couple of photos of Silver Scrolls with dogwood petals. When I went out this morning and saw this, all I could feel was awe because this is one of my unfinished beds.
