I posted this awhile back but I had to post again. This is one of Kim's seedlings that is a cross between a 2.5" bloom and a 14" bloom

FRANK'S BLACK EYED SUSAN x LILLIAN'S FUNKY SPUNKY 3.5"-4" bloom, scape 28" (and growing), bud count 40+, branching is 5 plus (didn't actually stop to count all the lateral Ys and Ws

What I am liking about this one is it is a bud builder and I just realized that yesterday. I noticed the blooms seem to be never ending so I took a closer look and the scape has the spiraling thing going on that bud builders have.

Michele - Thanks for posting the scape photo. Now I know what "bud builder" means! That is awesome! And the bloom isn't too shabby either! Nice cross! Thumbs up

Looks like a great little bud builder, with the great branching it should make a good parent also.

It is the only one that bloomed last year from that cross and I don't know if we kept anymore or tossed them last year, I am going to have to look. If we did I know they didn't bloom this year.

it will be registered after it increases which shouldn't actually take too long because it has prolifs growing on it also; I'd say in a couple of years. I have seed I'm planting from it now.

Here is the start of next years seedlings. I have way more seed than we need because I kept pods from named cultivars and seedlings. With 2 of us doing seeds we have a lot plus Kim does the dips and some of those pods have 30 seeds in them Blinking I guess I am trying to make up for losing all of my seedlings last year. nodding
Next season I will mainly be using our seedlings for pod setting with a few named varieties thrown in.

right now I have thirty four 72 hole seed trays planted with seeds and I have more to do. So that is 2448 seed so far. I can't imagine how some of the others do it with 14,000 seeds and 70,000 seeds. I think Gossard planted 58,000. Wayyyyyyy too many for me Blinking

For those who are going to ask.... that is sand on top of the trays and it is to help keep fungus gnats from laying eggs in the potting medium. They haven't been bad this year but they can be pretty bad sometimes.

Thank you for all the nice comments, it makes mine smile, too Smiling It was moved from the sdlg bed to the keeper bed late last fall so no br/bc taken this year. Bloom is 6 - 6 1/2 depending on recurve and very fragrant, Dormant, from Inner Flame X Indigenous Expressions. The important thing about it, besides the extremely nice relief, is that it opens completely even in our cold temps.

What a great seedling of Kim's! Thumbs up

LOL! I think 200 is a LOT! Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing I wouldn't know how to keep track of thousands of seedlings! That boggles my mind!

Good luck with all those newly planted seeds, Michele! Looks like it was a lot of work to plant them all. BTW - Nice use of cinder blocks and wood. I like it! Simple and inexpensive! Gives me ideas ....

I didn't know that sand helps prevent fungus gnats from laying eggs in the potting medium. Interesting! I've wondered about those gnats. Do the gnats cause the seedlings to die? Do they cause root fungus (root rot)? I water my seedlings with H2O2 (Hydrogen Peroxide) mixed in with the water. But I always wondered if the gnats are a problem as I sometimes see them in my starter pots.

You have to pot all those seeds up when they become seedlings next, right?

Next year should be fun at the nursery! Hurray! Hurray! Thumbs up

The gnats don't cause the seedlings to die, in fact the gnats do nothing at all. Their only purpose is to lay eggs really, they really don't eat but may feed on flower nectar. It's the larvae that cause all the problems, they will eat the seedling roots which in turn kills the seedlings.

Yes in about 6 weeks or before the middle of Sept. all those seedlings will have to be potted up. But after that I won't have to do anything until after bloom season next year when I flag the keepers.

Thank you, Michele. I didn't know that it was the larvae would do that. Can a pesticide be used to kill them or is that too risky for young seedlings to be exposed to?

I like using the Bayer tree and shrub granules for the fungus gnat larvae, I will add some of it later. I have also used the Bayer complete insect killer soil and turf. As long as you don't use too much it won't hurt the seedlings meaning don't pour down enough granules that it covers all of the soil, you just need a little if in seed trays or if in bigger containers then whatever the directions tell you for container sizes. I'm sure their are other products.

Maybe I should think about adding it though

Michele, that is a nice setup you have. My 30-40 seedlings seems puny next to you all! I'm just having a little fun with it though to see what I get. I wanted the excitement of seeing a totally new bloom and it is so much fun to dab pollen here and there and imagining what will come out of it.

MIchele.....Wow, you have been very busy. Your housing setting for your new seeds (sdlgs. to be) is basic, simple, and obviously adequate for your purposes. I like the construction.

Also, Michele...kudos, on your new little bud builder. You should do very well in marketing and selling this little beauty. Bud-builders are always in high demand, and your seedling is very sweet! Hurray! Hurray! Hurray!

Ed....Love your pastels. Have you showed any pix yet of, 'Something in Your Teeth'? Saw your cross of B-25-a with 'Wild Child', a plant that I really love.
