I wonder where all the adults might have been? This was taken at an outdoor picnic area on a pier. As expected, lots of seagulls and pigeons, then a ton of juvenile starlings. I didn't see one mature starling, which is what kind of grabbed my attention to begin with. Strange.

They are probably there because of a good food supply, they will join up with the adults in the fall when they all flock off elsewhere, I am so glad they don't like it here. Green Grin!

Margaret, you are fortunate. We battle with them every summer - they are quite destructive when building their nests and bully the feeders. That said, they are a gorgeous bird - just wish they'd go back to Europe...!!

The flocks stop by in the spring and the fall for a week or so during migration and they drive me crazy, they can devour a suet cake in minutes. Grumbling

Deb, after the parents have stopped feeding them, it seems the years fledglings band together in flocks. That's what I have noticed happens here with the bluebirds. house finches & more. They're at that "teenage" stage, too old to hang out with the parents anymore yet too young to be adults.

I'm with mcash70, between them and the sparrows it's like Parana's hit the suit feeder on some days around here! Scares the woodpeckers away, Ugh!

I will no longer feed during the summer because of the European House Sparrows. I have seen first hand out they do to our native Blue Birds. I have seen a drop in the Blue Birds around our house this summer.

Seeming female and juvie hummingbirds passing thru for migration. Also lots of catbird passing thru right now.

Does anyone know if this is a Blue-Gray Gnatcatcher? I have been trying to get a picture of this bird for weeks now! It hops around so fast and it is really timid. This pic is through the window, I apologize! It was gone after I was lucky enough to snap this one shot. I have one other I took a few weeks ago but it is real blurry.

There is another one coming around. Same shape as the Gnatcatcher but kind of a reddish brown color. Not sure what it is either. Been trying to get a pic. I need to look it up, it may be another color of Gnatcatcher. Not sure what kinds there are.

Cat, here are 2 links so you can see what's in your state. I have a couple of bird ID books for my area & sit & thumb through them form time to time. You'd be surprised how familiar you get with what birds you might see & then you see one in your yard & realize you know what it is!
http://www.indianaaudubon.org/...
http://indianajones.smugmug.co...

I have this one for my state of Florida. I love it! It is color coded on the edge of the pages so you look birds up by color. If you had this book when you saw the gnatcatcher, you would just go to the section for grey & then look at the birds whose main color is grey.

You might find it cheaper on Ebay. Also, you might get ones for neighboring states as those birds can end up in your territory especially if you live near the border.

Ann, Thanks for the links! I have one bird book but it seems like I see more birds than are listed in it. I definitely need to check out some better ones!

YVW Cat. I really like that one by Stan Teikela the best. It has the most accurate photos I think -- the color on them is right AND it shows the male AND the female which as you know, can look quite different. But it's always good to have 1 or 2 more b/c sometimes you need a different view or angle.

Ann, those are great links. I own 3 bird guides, Sibley 's, the Crossly Guide and a small Indian Birds guide. But I still often find it hard to match what I have seen. real photos are much better so by looking on the second site I was able to confirm that I recently saw a Yellow billed cuckoo! I knew it was a cuckoo but not sure which one.
