After the coldest winter ever recorded, then the warm couple of weeks, followed by more cold I was most concerned about my tree ferns. Now April has been the hottest and driest on record, with only 10 % of the average rainfall in the south! April is usually a showery month here and everything grows. The tree ferns in this dry season are not that happy, and it means watering them a lot. Plus watching the weather as having clear skies, the night time temperatures have been cold to frost on some nights! However they have come back and on one of the little tree ferns has three small new fronds just starting to come out!

I love Hydrangea petiolaris this woodland plant from Japan. It is a climbing Hydrangea and does not mind a north wall or fence.
It is Hardy here and nothing much bothers it. Got a shady place, have a look at one of these.

I adore Pyracantha coccinea (Firethorn), not only for its white blooms and fire red berries, but its viscous spikes. As a Hedge it is great against intruders who think twice after getting tangled in it, but also to inconsiderate Dog owners that allow their Animals to mess on the pavements! I have seen many a Dog who wished he had not cocked his leg against one of these.
Here is one in flower yesterday! Plus the birds adore the berries in a bad winter.
