I had some rutabagas last night for dinner. They get sweeter after a frost. I also had Brussel Sprouts the night before, they were great. Those and some beets and collard greens are all I have left in the garden. Everything else is gone. Sad It freezes here nearly every night now.

Just got back from vacation--I need to go out and see if my brussels sprouts and carrots are still OK. I know it got pretty cold here while we were gone, but not sure how much frost we got. Too dark to look tonight, so will venture out after work tomorrow.

It was a shock hearing we were coming from 85 degrees back to 36 degrees (temp they told us it was in Indy as our plane was taking off for home). Sigh......

Linda, I would guess that your Brussels sprouts and carrots are perfectly fine... I still have carrots, beets, broccoli and Chinese cabbage, as well as some late scallions, out in my garden, with no problems. Smiling

Brussel sprouts seem sweeter after they have frozen some. Mine are still out there too, but I have been munching on them frequently now. nodding

It got down to 28 while we were gone. My patio planters are toast, as expected. Still have not gotten home before dark to check out the brussels sprouts and carrots (darned daylights savings time---like it much better when Indiana did not change times). It's dark by 6:00 now....not sure how much of a tradeoff that is for a little more daylight in the morning. I think I prefer the extra light in the evening. Sigh.....

Our vacation was great....we took a 7-night Caribbean cruise. Even though we've been to those ports several times, it was still nice to get away.

Tom--RJ is beautiful. What type of turkey is he?

What a strange year this is... I think the lowest our temp has gone is around 29 degrees.

I cut my asparagus plants down today -- what a mess! My plants have never grown so big as they did this summer -- from the looks of the stalks we could have kept harvesting for at least another month.... (if I hadn't already been totally sick of eating nothing but asparagus! Rolling my eyes. )

Sounds like you had a nice get away Linda!

RJ is a Royal Palm turkey, That's a heritage breed that is a bit smaller then others. There's a story about RJ in the farming forum a ways back in the raisign turkeys thread that I posted a couple years ago. He's quite a bird!

It was fun reviewing that thread! It fascinates me that birds have personalities that vary as much as humans' personalities.

I forget who said it: "Some are good dads, some are bad dads, and some are just sperm donors."

It's pretty sobering that some turkey-turkeys are better parents than some human turkeys!

That's the one Rick, glad you dug it out. This year the hen wanted to hatch eggs again, she hid a nest, and I couldn't let her sit out side, as we have to many predators, so when I found her nest I put some eggs into her nest in the pen, and she started to brood them. None of them hatched, and all of them have exploded, but she keeps sitting on the darn empty nest. It's too late or I'd give her some chicken eggs to hatch. She's been brooding since June, and I'm worried she will get to thin and weak to make the winter if she doesn't stop this nonsence.

That's so sad, Tom. I worry enough about mine during the spring sitting...it's tough to think your gal is putting herself through that now.
None of our eggs hatched last year, but I had the birds on a fairly rich diet the winter preceding. This year I made sure they had more variety in their feed and less fat, and we did have three eggs hatch out of the five I allowed the hen to keep.

Sure hope your hen pulls herself out of it soon and starts preparing for winter. Against my better judgement (I really do know better Rolling my eyes. ) we're planning on keeping our pair's offspring over the winter, too. If their coop gets to looking too crowded I guess I'll be moving them into the barn.

If she looks too weak I might just put her in the barn in a pen to snap her out of it, and get some weight gain. It's not too cold yet, but it won't be long I'm afraid. She's about 7 or 8 years old, maybe going a bit senile Rolling on the floor laughing Her first eggs this spring didn't have strong shells, but then later on they became normal. They free range, so they get a good variety in their diet. What breed do you raise Chelle?

Tom, I think the closest ID we figured was maybe Bronze Broad Breasted(??) ...something similar at any rate. They're the same ones I showed in those other threads a couple of years ago. Smiling

Soft shells was my problem last year, I think. Lack of calcium in the diet, I wonder?

I've put my birds to work anyway...they're crushing up leaves for the garden right now. Big Grin I pile 'em in their pen and by the next day they're fine! They love the work...ahem... play. Lovey dubby
