Wowser, I have now, Neil! Thank you for pointing me in the right direction, there's already so much to take in here on ATP! I was particularly struck by the beautiful displays of gladioli, the violas (I have "Johnny Jump-Ups -- I think the official name is "Helen Mount" ?), and the topiaries. Also just by how ancient the place is... King Henry VIII !! It's always such a reality check for me, how young the USA actually is. We've been watching the Tour de France on TV and enjoying the "tour" more than the actual race, so interesting to see the views of the old castles and the towns.

I hope you are having a wonderful gardening season!

Sandy

Dear Sandy, Hampton Court is strange as you walk down the north long water to the River Thames at the bottom. For it was here that Queen Anne Boleyn walked down in 1536 to be taken down the river to the Tower of London for treason. Two days later she was executed on Tower green A few more followed her fate, and many other people as well.
Even on a good day the wind blows straight off the Thames and up the long water, weird to think you are walking on the same route the Queen did in 1536 knowing she would meet her end.
Regards.
Neil.

Curiouser and curiouser.... Why dear Neil does the Thames seem always need to be preceded by the word 'River'? I mean, we have rivers here in the land of the rejects, lost, lonely, and wretched that are of of equal importance (I KNOW you hate that equal thing) but we don't see to 'title' them. Sandy...have you even crossed the River Mississippi? Hilarious!

Most Rivers are preceded by the word 'River', why I do not know. However the Thames is a Royal River so has more importance than most!

Jamie I may not have crossed the 'River Mississipi' but I have crossed the 'Mississipi River' just seems you have the names backwards over there!!!!

Actualy the word River in front denotes the difference between the River Thames and the Thames Estuary which of course is at the end near the sea. Further upstream, where it is still a stream, it is just the Thames. So you have; a young river, a mature river, an old river and the inclusion of the word River tells you which bit your in/on/near.

A lot of our rivers have estuaries at the end and they tend to be tidal whereas the river part isn't so it is an important differentiation for sailors. If you were talking about the river's course you might talk about the Thames Valley which covers it from one end to the other.

Also some of our rivers share their names with places so you could talk about Hull, which is a City, or the River Hull which the City stands on both banks of and also bridges. It avoids confusion to be more specific - See its all in the evolution of history, which we have a lot of Sticking tongue out

Dear Lucy, I have never thought of it like that! However it is a wonderful plant, please believe me. My mother adores them as she can grow them, so they must be tough.

I agree Thank you Carol! See, I think we actually do similarly by naming deltas and bays differently than the rivers attached. But, that system DOES make sense....hummm...now we must have to think of other things to befuddle Neil a bit (it is SO fun you know!).

Dear Jamie, I used to grow a lot of these so how about this for a fine example of a Strelitzia reginae or the Bird of Paradise flower.

I don't think he would like Sarracenias though! Being a carnivorous plant it has a rather awful taste.
